Some of you may have seen my scale solar system model but now, after many months of thought and a number of failed "proof of concept" attempts, I have finally come up with a way of making a model of Jupiter that is at the same scale (about 30M:1).

I have created a 4.5m diameter "fan" that folds small enough to fit into the car. The arms of the fan will support a semicircle image of Jupiter that is 4.5m wide and 2.2m high. All I need is a nice image of Jupiter that I can transfer to the fabric of the fan, unfortunately my painting skills are restricted to walls and skirting boards (it's a pity Uranus wasn't the largest....green bedsheet...done!). I am thinking of printing the image onto A3 and dividing into squares and drawing a grid onto the fabric to make the copy process a bit easier. I was thinking of using a data projector to project the image onto the material, but I don't have a wall big enough to hold it and I doubt I could get the projector far enough away to get an image large enough, let alone bright enough to actually see anything.

I have found a couple of images that are up to 1900 pixels or so wide, but when these are scaled up to A3 they become quite chunky. I have looked on the NASA site but so far have not been able to find anything of the resolution I am looking for, I have a couple of Voyager and Cassini shots at the moment but I can't find anything higher resolution.

Can anyone point me to a suitable image? Maybe something around 4000+ pixels across? I only need one hemisphere, and preferably with the Great Red Spot in a good location, showing some nice cloud formations (hopefully my artistic abilities will be able to reproduce them).

When I have finished this project, I will post some images! So far I have only shown the empty fan structure to some people and they have been amazed at this, wait till they see a 7 square metre image of Jupiter unfurl before their eyes!

Have looked on photojournal (http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/targetFamily/Jupiter) ?
Also you can search Google images & select minimum size required from options, eg images larger then 10MP (http://www.google.com.au/images?q=Jupiter&um=1&hl=en&tbs=isch:1,isz:lt,islt:12mp&ei=n5IqTNuqHcuIkAXtu_mcAw&sa=N&start=147&ndsp=21#q=Jupiter&um=1&hl=en&ndsp=21&tbs=isch:1,isz:lt,islt:10mp&source=lnt)
Hope this helps.

Cheers
Arek

Thanks for the suggestion. I did a search for images larger than 3000 pixels wide, even tried restricting to nasa.gov, but didn't come up with anything better than the 1900 I already have :(. So I have drawn a 10mm grid onto the A3 printout, which will end up around 150mm on the final.

Off to Spotlight on Saturday to buy some material :)

hey trevor, your idea with the projector isn't stupid at all. My dad used to have a buisness next to a sign writer, and he used a projector all the time to get the sign the right size and a template on the wall.

If you don't have enough wall space do it in halves aka, on the image that your putting on the projector just mark a half line, then on the material, mark another half line, and use those as your alginment, then, do one half at a time. Your painting skills don't have to be that great to get the idea across.

Thats just how i would look at it, as printing off tiny little squares would look like a patch cheapy job.

Good luck mate
