too much time on my hands type of question

Hi all, with a strained back, overcast skies and my wife on a work trip I just have way too much time on my hands so here is a mindless question that has bugged me for a while;

In the movie 'Armageddon' is the retired sailor using a real telescope or a Hollywood toy?
