I'm a member of a woodworking forum and another member there just posted a woodworking project of building a 10" wooden tube Newtonian.
I suggested that he post the result to IceInSpace. He's not a member here but did give me permission to post some WIP photos .

You can follow the original thread here (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f40/10-f5-newtonian-113300/). I think you have to be a member to see the photos though.

Edit: All of the photos of the build are also here (http://astronomy.turkeys.net.au/).

I'm a member of that forum too, but haven't visited for a few weeks.

What a gorgeous job. I love seeing how things come together and turn into something beautiful like that. I would have liked to see some earlier photo's to see how the tube was started. Not that I have the know how or the tools to do such a thing:P. I'm just into a bit of woodcarving and making dolls furniture.
Hey, I've just had an idea. Maybe I could make a dolls dob.:D:lol:

Thanks for posting that Geoff.

An awful lot of work went into that tube. What was the wood ?

I remember making a smaller one out of three plies of 1/32" balsa many years ago, which was cold moulded diagonally, rather than glued lengthwise and milled (routed) like that one. The cold moulding method produced a very strong tube with no need for rings.

All that's mentioned in the original article is that it's hardwood.

In the most recent post to that thread, he did mention a problem with shrinkage of the tube that caused it to lift from the tube rings.
Perhaps daveGee's method (http://users.tpg.com.au/users/daveg/Tube.html) is better for this.
