Hi all,
I need to get a bigger length of cable for the Synscan hand controller of my HEQ5 Pro mount. On inspection, seems like simple RJ45 plugs at both ends.

Would a Cat 5e patch lead (as sold by Jaycar http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=YN8205&keywords=Cat+5e&form=KEYWORD) be the go!?

Is there any limit to the size of the cable in order to work effectively?
I was thinking 10m!

Cheers for any tips.
Doug

hey doug.

I have exactly what you are thinking of using. 10 meters for Cat.5e would be best for running this distance as its twisted pairs arnt all the same they have different twist rates. but realistically if the signal is decent coming from the host and recipent devices cat 5 is good for some 50 - 100 meters. after that you need either a stronger signal or signal amplifiers.

Just make sure its a straight though plug not a cross over :)

Yep, I use a 5m Cat5 lead to extend the cable on my hand controller... it now sits on my desk with my computer.. Makes composing images SO much easier!

why would you be using the controller anyhow alex :D doesn't the rumblepad do what you need? i just put the controller into a usb hub and controll the whole lot from the PC

Not usin EQMOD with the HEQ5 yet Brendan... Its just... well.. So much hassle for such little gain...

yea, if i do a good polar alignment, and a good 2 star alignment my go-to's rarely put the target more than 4 arc mins from dead centre of frame, guiding in maximdl gets me better results than pulse guiding.. On occasion i will connect the mount to the pc just for remote control when its really cold outside.. Still i don.t use eqmod, just telescope control through the sky.. Maybe i'll give it another go one day, maybe..
