Hey all:

Got my shiney new ED80 + NEQ6 (it didn't look THAT big in the showroom at bintel....). I take full responsibility for Sydney weather at the moment.

Yesterday I set it all up to look at a tree about 60 metres away just to get the hang of everything and found the focus point was about... 6 inches past the end of the focuser tube at full extension(and upside down)

Is this because the object I was looking at was too close? Or do I need a diagonal to lengthen the light path? Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks

Anthony

hi
i think youll need a diagonal to get focus with a eyepiece.

Yes, you will need a diagonal, or an extension tube. The image is upside-down because in a straight-thru' configuration, the light is is inverted. Ditto straight-thru' finders. This is the reason that so many photos and illustrations, particularly in older, sky guides, show the objects inverted and back-to front.
A star diagonal adds a 'kink' in the light-path and therefore "re-inverts" the image to right side up"
Enjoy your new gear.

Yes - I had to use either a diagonal or a 50mm extension tube
