As the title says, what is the difference between the black diamond and the regular ed80?

From memory, the type of glass used for the objectives is different. I think the focuser is the same, but build quality is higher on the black diamonds.

BD ED80 has the 10:1 focuser where Pro has the single speed focuser.

hi mick. iv'e been told the focuser is upgraded, but the optics are EXACTLY the same. lots more dollars for focus and finish:shrug:.hunt around and you'll pick up an(old gold)ota for around 400-500 compared to about 1200 odd. i paid 399 for mine, and i cant tell the difference in image quality

The optics are indeed the same.. They are still the FPL-53 80mm F/7.5 doublet that has earned its spot as one of the most widely used astro-photography tools...

As Darrell just said.. get the gold ED80 Pro for less than half the cost of the Black Diamond ED80, spend $250 on a william optics 10:1 crayford and what you end up with is a scope for $750 that has the same optics and a better focuser than one advertised for $1200 odd... Seems like childs play to me..

I thought that the Black Diamonds used Schotz glass (higher quality)?

Exactly !
The FPL glasses are ED crowns, similar to the Schott FK series. FPL 53 has
almost the dispersion characteristics of fluorite. BPM51 is similar to
Schott KzFS N1, which Roland Christen originally used in his early triplet
designs. NSL3 is similar to Schott K3 and along with BSL7 (similar to
Schott BK7) might make a suitable triplet with one of the FPL glasses.

i have to admit that i bought the black one myself, hadent done my homework good enough.
it would have been a smart thing to buy a gold one, and a moonlite focuser instead.
but, what da heck, i love the wievs it gives, its a nice scope.

i have read something about possible better coatings on the new black pro, but have not found any solid info on that being true.

are these 2 scopes the same length?

on a web site i found it says that the tube length of the gold is 900mm
and the tube lenght for the black diamond is 600mm.

is this true?

hi
yes they weigh the same, maybe a few grams in difference, the new one has a 2 speed, and the old one has a 1 speed focuser.
