I've out grown my GSO dual speed focuser and are looking to upgrade.
Is anyone using JMI's NGF-DX1 Focuser?, what is it like with heavy EP's
up to the almost 1kg size.

Anyone know of anyone selling moonlite focusers in Oz? or Feathertouch?

The focuser is to go on a 16" dob

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Mick,

Have you had any experience with the JMI EV-1n Crayford Focuser?
and how this would compare to the MoonLite CR that My Astro Shop
is selling. I have heard some folks prefer Moonlite over JMI.

l have a JMI EV-1n and it is great, smooth with absolutely no movement no matter what l put in it. l haven't used a Moonlight focuser and probably won't now, although l hear they are very good.

Rob,

I rate "all" of the JMI focusers that I have used, which excludes the latest model, a good notch behind the Feathertouch and Moonlite. It gets no better in any respect than the Feathertouch, which I rate about as superior to the Moonlite as the Moonlite is superior to the JMI-DX1. The Feathertouch isn't cheap but worth every single cent IMO.

John,

As your message came in, a Feathertouch appeared on the radar while
corresponding with another person. I've just put an order in for a
FTF2020 CR + EG adaptor :)

Although it would be hard to blame you for this one, I've got to stop
taking your advice. Say me.... 5 x XW's, 2 x T5's and a bunch of
Astronomik filters later  I ordered a 5mm XW and a Astronomik 2" UHC
filter yesterday. Oh yeah just to finish off, I'm sipping on a glass of
Galway pipe  now I'm really worried.

Cheers

When I was looking around at focusers Rob I "think " the feathertouch
was the heaviest from memory.. might help with your balance problem. ?

Suggest a 24 " deep sky optics mirror to him John so he can flick that nasty little 16" my way for nix
:):P

That spec isn't shown on Starlight Instruments website. So I'm not sure
how much heavier it will be compared to my clunky 683gm LP GSO. But
since adding the 31mm t5 the scope balances perfectly. So I wouldn't
want it to be too much heavier.

Tsk...tsk...tsk... min 28"-32" bro ;)... might need the 16" as a finder .
I do have plans on having the 16" refigured if possible, if not then maybe
have a 16" f4.5 made. Maybe just maybe you might get it then ;)

Go the FT you won't regret it. Mind you I have the obsession, not the scope, but three of the FT's. LOL.

Gary,

You wouldn't happen to own a FTF2020 CR and happen to know what it
weighs?

Hi Rob,

You won't regret that purchase. Like Gary, I will soon have 3 Feathertouch focusers.

Once you use the Feathertouch and get used to it you will appreciate the quality it oozes and you will never again want to use anything else. The quality of machining and fit and finish on the Feathertouch is at another level compared to the competition IMO.

Contact Peter Read for the weight of the focuser. He will have one lying around "not" attached to a scope.

Thats where it's coming from. Was having a bit of an email chat with him
last night. I thought the FT would be out of my price range... not quite.
So I ordered one from him. Yes looking forward to tossing what is on the
scope at present. And I've heard many a great report about FT.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone

John has that effect on people...:D

Although you have already decided I'll still say my bit.

Feathertouch>Moonlite>JMI

While I think the Moonlite is closer to the Feathertouch than John does, I'd still give the Feathertouch the edge. I have 2 Moonlites on reflectors (dobsonsian mounted replaced a JMI) and the Feathertouch on a refractor...

The Moonlites are good no doubt but the Feathertouch is better...

FWIW, the FTF2020 CR is 53gm lighter than the LP GSO crayford
focuser, which comes in at 683gm. That includes baseplates.

Sorry Rob, just found this. You are sorted now with the weights?
Even twice as heavy I would have one.

Np's Gary, yup I sure am. Thanks

It arrived yesterday, very nice looking piece of kit. I'm hoping to install
it over the weekend.
