KNOWING

Only at the movies 26.03.09

Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage (National Treasure 2, Leaving Las Vegas) stars in KNOWING, the next gripping action-thriller of global proportions from Australian visionary Alex Proyas (I, Robot, The Crow).

When an Astrophysics professor stumbles on a set of coded numbers, written in 1959 and buried in a time capsule at his son’s school, he makes a startling discovery. The cryptic message predicts every major disaster of the past 50 years and holds chilling predictions about future catastrophes—the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale.

Rose Byrne (Troy, Two Hands), Ben Mendelsohn (Australia, ‘Love My Way’) and Chandler Canterbury (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) also star in this riveting feature about a father’s desperate battle to save his child—and the world.

To kick it off, my favourite sci-fi movie would be the Matrix series and the Star Wars series. I can't pick just one :)

For a disaster flick, I reckon Independence Day would be up there.. Very corny but Will Smith saves it :)

For sci-fi I was going to say "The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" movie but when Mike mentioned Star Wars, well I have to admit they are up there too for me (but I like the original episodes IV,V and VI more than the remastered ones. The new ones are somehow sterilized).

There are so many to choose from as well as the usual ones that everyone knows of but just to be different I think one of my favourite ones would definately have to be 'Event Horizon'.

Fifth Element for me.

bruce willis and sci fi, what more could you want- except maybe a giant squid.

The early classic "Forbidden Planet" for me.

Back in late high school at the end of the 70's, we were given the choice of studying this movie or go the dry road and study the original Shakespeare play "The Tempest". We took the movie and it's been my favourite sci-fi ever since. The fact that its premise is based on the Tempest just serves to reinforce my respect for it. The Tempests' main character, Prospero, employed magic to control his environment on the island, where Forbidden Planet's Morbius utilised technology. Wonderful parallels that really work. Technology, taken to its ultimate conclusion, will be indistiguishable from magic. Thanks for that observation Arthur C. Clarke

Some good ones coming out already, but for a SciFi with a difference "The Quiet Earth". Saw it once during the early 80's at the Valhala in Glebe and I've never found it since.

All good but you have to love the original...

The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
Classic sci-fi drama with a message... stars Michael Rennie as Klaatu, an emissary from the stars who arrives on Earth with his robot companion, Gort, to warn mankind about the danger of nuclear warfare. Patricia Neal, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray also star; Robert Wise directs.

"Klaatu barada nikto!"

I like all of the films listed so far and they would be in my "top picks" but for my money you gotta go with the original Klaatu and Gort.

I'm sure I could give a different answer every day and they would all be my favourite still, so I'm going to settle on Bladerunner with Harrison Ford

Favoutite is probably 2001: A Space Odyssey
But close second would be Silent Running with Bruce Dern
If anthropological dramas count as SciFi, I'd also include A Quest for Fire.

Favourite all time Sci Fi, has to be the original H.G.Wells The Time Machine with Rod Taylor, a true classic, followed by the classic 1960's TV series Lost In Space, (just for the record I never said "Danger, Danger Will Robinson")

Cheers

No, no no!! You can't do this! The question was: "what is your favourite" - i.e. one, singular, uno, ich, eine - not two, or three! LOL!

If were had the luxury, then I'd have to add the cerebral classic "2001" and THX1138 too.

"The Thing" by John Carpenter (1982) was a good scary sci-fi movie.
Didn't see another movie for months after that!
Worth a look if you can find it.

Yep. Its hard to go past the Matrix series and Starwars or the original Stargate movie. But for something a little different I would vote for "The Last Starfighter" for SciFi. And for disaster movies, the "28Days" series.

Which one should I mention? :)

Planet of the Apes (1968) was an early favourite of mine.

But I can't underestimate the original Star Trek series.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) also deserves to be mentioned…

And the Matrix trilogy.

But since I should give only one name… I would go for…

The Solaris by Andrey Tarkovskiy (1972 version in Russian) possibly because, Stanislav Lem's plot was as philosophical/physics based as Arthur C. Clarke's plot for the Odyssey but was more character driven, and as a teenager, I fell in love with Natalya Bondarchuk.

I am not a film critic, but I strongly suggest you see the film. :)

Oh dear...talk about a tough call.

Well, "Rollerball" was interesting, "Soylent Green" was curiously memorable (shame about the ham Heston though) "The Blob" (recall Steve McQueen?) was fun as was "the Thing". "Logan's Run" was entertaining thanks to the talent - such as Jenny Agutter - visual talent (sorry ladies) but being held to pick one and only one........

2001 is the one. (shame about the switch from Saturn to Jupiter but good that Bruce Dern got to fly past Saturn on the Valley Forge...)

Though, "Earth vs. The Flying Suacers" had a certain comedy about it all...and similar (if memory serves) in a few aspects to that famous and very memorable flick "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

Blade Runner .. all cuts are good, but Final Cut is very good.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die." ..

I've yet to see the attack ships, but I'll keep looking.

Equal first for me are:
1951 version of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' and '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
But my introduction to anything to do with space was 'Fireball XL5'.
Any one remember that? I still remember the theme song.:P

All the above were great too, but no one's mentioned 'Brazil'.
I remember that being pretty good.

g'day,

i reckon 'space odyssey 2001' gets my vote as long as you fast forward through the long psychedelic colour sequence towards the end (and maybe also the pan-am trip to the space station and the briefing in the space station). I've seen S.O. 2001, 6 or 7 times and always notice something new - like the 'high pitched sand falling' noise on the soundtrack when he's retrieving the dead astronaut. Love showing parts of it to high school kids for their reactions. The movie would have to be one of the "most referenced in other movies" too.

My favourite Sci Fi / Disaster movie is a combined effort, the original "day the Earth Stood Still". Simply because everything is scarier in black and white, and if the biggest threat to mankind from space is a slowwww movie robot named Gort, we are doing OK!:scared:

Best Science Fiction Movie? It has to be "2001 a Space Odessy" Even in this post StarWars era the special effects are still believable, and it has a story that doesn't involve mindless explosions.

Omaroo
17-03-2009, 08:07 AM
Agreed Ian. I saw the movie with my big brother in '68 when it was released. I remember back in the early 70's that there were discussions going on in what approximated cyber-space (uni pubs and libraries) at the time, in reference to actually being able to find errors in the physics of the production. There were only half a dozen or so examples found, and not all of them "glaring" - not bad for a movie.

One memorable one was Heywood Floyd's meal tray on his trip to the space station, where after he took a sip from a liquid compartment the food didn't stay in the straw as some would expect in a zero-g environment, but went back down into the container. There was an opposing camp that postulated that in drawing liquid from the container it would create a partial vacuum in the container thus drawing the food back down the straw. LOL! There were a couple of others, but overall it goes to show how well made the movie was and the attention to detail that Kubrick applied by the level of the bickery going on.

jjjnettie
17-03-2009, 08:31 AM
I've always concidered the best disaster movies to be "The Day After Tomorrow" and "On The Beach" (the 1950's version with Ava Gardner, not so much the fairly recent Bryan Brown one).
The threat of nuclear war is always in the back of peoples minds. What would happen if they actually did hit those buttons?
Both of these senarios are disturbingly real.
The stuff of nightmares.

Without a doubt for me it's the original War Of The Worlds with Gene Barry. The Martian machines still stir up imagination and awe on the home theatre, would be great to see on the big screen. It's amazing that some 50 odd years on those machines still look so menacing that you could cut them into a 2009 sci fi and they would still look futuristic. I have lost track of how many times I have watched this movie. Forbidden Planet a close second, Contact is my third, Alien is my 4th, then 2001 and finally Starship Troopers. Hmmm seems I like watching things that blow up. Disaster film? How about the recent Day The Earth Stood Still - now that was a complete disaster.

Love everything mentioned so far ...

... the classics like Forbidden Planet (they had little cubes that, when inserted into the viewer, played movies! 1957! Now I have compact flash and memory sticks!)

... Contact. Huge fan of Carl Sagan (and Jodie Foster)

... but number 1 would have to be the original Star Wars! The Empire Strikes Back may be a better movie but Star Wars was revolutionary (more so than 2001), a classic "western" style good versus evil and a great sound track.

As I have already nominated my choices, so this dosen't count but I absolutley loved the film "Tron"
Made in 1982, it was one of the first films using computer animation inconjunction with live action sequences.
Loved the concept of the "MCP- Master Control Program" sucking Flynn into its system only for him to team up with the program TRON to bring down the MCP's control of the network.

Rumour has it that there is a new Tron film being made and set for release in 2011 - potentially called "TRON 2.0"
Have also heard that the band "Daft Punk" will compose the score to the film.
I cant wait

Hi Gang,

For me I guess it has to be the classic "Fiend Without A face" for sci-fi, some of those special effects are pretty amazing and pretty scary for an old film! Followed by This Island Earth, When Worlds Collide, Forbidden Planet, War Of The Worlds (Gene Berry) and the classic Thing From Another World. I like older films and there are just so many classics to choose from.

As for disaster movies, it has to be a toss up between the drama of The Towering Inferno and the special effects of Meteor. I think I'll plump for Meteor. I also am a big fan of natural disaster movies such as Twister (Helen Hunt, need I say more!!!) Volanoe and Dantes Peak.

My favourites would probably be The Dish (if that counts as science-fiction) and Sunshine. And Apollo 13, if that counts too. =P

I've also got a bit of a zombie movie collection started, if they're counted as global disaster films. =P Dawn and Day of the Dead are pretty neato!

Well my fave would have to be Contact with Jodie Foster, it mixes the human thought that we are not alone, coupled with science, and a great form of astronomy. No mater how many times i watch it im always enthralled.

As for disaster movies. ARMAGEDDON. :D yeeehar even though it isnt a disaster for earth, it illustrates just how close we come every day to utter doom... I for shawwww don't want to go out like the dinosaurs...

My pre-teen years were dotted with sci-fi movies like Planet of the Apes with Charlton Heston and The Time Machine with Rod Taylor. I saw the first Star Wars movie at the cinema when I was 11 and it was just amazing. I still love it to this day, it has to be my Sci-Fi pick.

Not much of a disaster movie fan, unless Flying High counts? First real disaster movie I saw, and therefore the benchmark for me, was The Poseidon Adventure, at the drive-ins. It was my brother's pick for his 11th birthday, I was 9. It was truly frightening, what were my parents thinking? I can still remember the theme song "...there's got to be a morning after, if we can hold on through the night...".

I forgot to mention one of my favourite disaster movies....

Poseidon Adventure is brilliant, Towering Inferno and Surround Sound EarthQuake!! HA!...was such a good LFE it made my cousin throw up!

Other disaster flicks include the Day After and On the Beach were spooky but with a thermonuclear theme, "Fail-Safe" is the winner. For those that cannot recall, a mistake sends USAF bombers into Russian airspace to attack Moscow. One makes it and to prove it was an error, New York is nuked by the USAF. Very spooky since it was based on the actually fail-safe proceedures of the day.

Have fun!

John.

PS - Can anyone recall the British made documentary on what a post nuclear war Brittain would be like? THAT was scary. J

Hi All,

My absolute all time favourite SCI FI movie is : The Fifth Element - Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich - absolutely awesome!

As for disaster movies...... Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz was a DISASTER! ;) Absolutely the WORST movie of all time!

Cheers

With sci-fi movies at least you can say there are a few classics that will indelibly remain in the pyshe of many people and worth talking about (Stars Wars, Blade Runner, Aliens....).

As for disaster movies most end up in a heap and fall short of being remembered as masterpieces. Even the likes of Independance Day, Twister with there big budgets, end up with cheesy, corny endings, bordering of nausea. (imo).:P

I guess they are disaster movie in a literal sense:whistle:

Nice selections there folks - a great scifi filmography already...
I almost peed myself in fright at Alien (as a 12 yr old) AND at Event Horizon (at 29yrs!) ... yep - too much info eh.
I tip my hat to Serenity (big FireFly fan here). I was happy the scifi-western was recognised & accoladed with cinema-release.
Loved Contact (the book was better - Carl Sagan was my boyhood hero).
I plead your forgiveness for really enjoying the pseudo-science scifi/disaster The Core.
My top pick is a tie - BladeRunner (both cinematic releases for narrative & mood reasons) AND Babylon5 (I persisted and was swept up by the grand, intricate story arcs).
- Self-indulgent moment over now -

:hi:I would have to say that my favourite sci-fi movies have to be Star Wars, as i just love all of the films. My favourite disaster movies are Armageddon and Independance Day- I can't choose between the two as they are both equally good!

Very hard to pick but as my all-time favourites, they would have to be "The Time Machine" for Sci-Fi and "A Night to Remember" (the b/w version of the Titanic disaster).

I would just be glued to the TV when these were on when I was young.

For its time (1956), Forbidden Planet was a milestone for special effects and sound. I'd love to see an intelligent remake of this great SciFi movie. Leslie Nielsen, who played the commander of the United Planets Cruiser in that movie, is still active in the industry, recently playing parts in the Scary Movies series and the spoof Superhero Movie (2008)!!!!!
For an intelligent disaster movie, I don't think you could go past Deep Impact. After the recent real-life asteroid miss, the movie is particularly relevant.

Such an easy question...not.
I'm gonna have to go with my most watched sci-fi, "Fifth Element" truly has a bit of everything in it.
However closely followed by "Blade Runner". If I'm not mistaken the director also directed one or more of the 'Alien' films, can really see the similarity, the man does love gloom and the sound of dripping water!

How about SF "Gattaca" with Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Alan Arkin and Jude Law.:thumbsup:And for disaster how about "Armageddon" with Bruce Willis.

It was Farrah Fawett and Kirk Dougles being chase by a psycho robot, very lame movie, much like a movieAngie Dickinson was in call the “Inseminator”.

Did enjoy the space cowboy movie “Outlander” with Sean Connery about a mining company working on Jupiter’s moon Io

For me it would have to be a hard choice between Star Gate the original movie and Serenity absolutely love Firefly. I think Serenity wins out just because it is such a different concept for a sci fi.

Disaster movie would be anything with Tom Cruise in it ha ha

Hi All,

There have been lots of very good and excellent ones mentioned already -- but really, in the end there is no contest:

Years, if not decades ahead of its time in special effects, direction, sound-track, camera-work and overall execution is ...

"Open the pod-bay doors HAL"

... (2001 A Space Odessey).

The attention to detail on the physics, science and astronomy is exceptionally high considering it was made in the mid-60s.

Leaving aside the genre, it is widely considered one of the best films ever made full stop

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey_(film)

Honourable mentions go to all the Star Wars films, Contact, Forbidden Planet and Apollo 13 (more a docu-drama than Sci-fi but ...)

Best,

Les D

"Contact" would just win over "Apollo 13" for me.

But Aliens, Battlestar Galactica (TV Movie), Serenity, Starship Troopers, Star Wars (original 3 and number 6) and the original "the day the planet stood still" are all way up there.

2001 Space Odyssey is simply a masterpiece but I don't class this as a movie, it's cinema art.

Yet to see a few mentioned here.....though

It used to be Star Wars - original triplet, but now Wall-e has surpassed it - so many great messages i reckon & more of an adults than kids movie

I wanted to like 2001: A sp od but found it pretty boring, kubrick is a weird guy

My theory is; if earth was destroyed, why no go out happy!
All the doom and gloom in the movies in this thread don't sound good. What is the point of just blowing up, being consumed by Aliens or having a big rock land on our head?

Still Flesh Gordon for me....

SCI-FI : The original Star Wars Trilogy, Planet of the Apes, 2001.

DISASTER : I Am Legend - Will Smith basically did a monologue, right until near the end. Brilliant. Then, there's always the nightly news...

You know, the more I think about this movie, the more fondly I remember it!
It was a great (yet affectionate) satire on Flash Gordon that had a bizarre yet hilarious plot. The fx were actually quite good and there was a heap of....um....other stuff in it as well.
I think I was about 17 or 18 when I first saw this film. A mate and I took these two girls to see it on a first date, not really knowing what it was going to be about.
The mate and I nearly died laughing! First and last date with this pair. They both refused to have anything to do with us ever again.
Still brings a smile to my face!
