Hi,

I wish to purchase a light pollution filter and have had recommendations for either a Hutech IDAS LPS-P2 or the new Orion Imaging Filter (as opposed to the older skyglow filter orion make).

Links to their spectral responses are below:-
Hutech - http://www.sciencecenter.net/hutech/idas/filtplt.htm
Orion - http://www.telescope.com/control/product/~category_id=photo_accessories/~pcategory=astro-imaging/~product_id=05559?id=cadf (http://www.telescope.com/control/product/%7Ecategory_id=photo_accessories/%7Epcategory=astro-imaging/%7Eproduct_id=05559?id=cadf)

They are pretty similar with a few slight variations but as I have no idea what the particular frequencies are that need to be blocked I can't really make a good assessment of which is better. Both prices are pretty much on par.

Any suggestions on what would be best for blocking Canberra light pollution as well as moon light would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Markus

Markus if you can spare the dollars the Hutech are certainly much better, but they are not cheap.

A 2" one will set you back well over 300 USD with out shipping.

Thanks for that Leon, I think I'll go with your advice. I found a site that's selling the Hutech IDAS LPS-P2 2" for AU$242 (which is cheaper than the Orion at Bintel, AU$265), though I'm still waiting on a price for postage. I'm pretty sure they're located in Adelaide so it shouldn't be too much.

Thanks again,

I just got a reply regarding postage of the filter, it seems the price on his webpage (last updated April 2008) is no longer current and AU$348 is the new price with postage included.

The benefits still seems worth it so I'll just have to bite the bullet. :)

Yep that is pricy, but in the end it will be well worth it, you wont get a better filter, and it will last you forever.

Try Peter Tan in Hong Kong - good dealer

I got my 72mm LPS2 from him - slightly better price than US/AU dealers.
