LOOKS GREAT MIKE. YOU HAVE DONE A WONDERFUL JOB
My only criticism is that the font is a little small in the posts. :D
24-07-2005, 10:46 PM
I agree with Houghy. Looks great but the font looks a bit small
24-07-2005, 11:12 PM
Dont listen to them mike all they need is new glasses. :drink: lol
looks great mate but I think the font is a tad large ; )
24-07-2005, 11:21 PM
Great Job Mike & Terry!!!
I like all the links on the left. I always forget that this site has a Home Page! Now it is available right here in the Forums.
Even the smilies are easier to get to.
WOW! I am going exploring to check everything out.
Well done
24-07-2005, 11:28 PM
Looks great Mike - top job!
24-07-2005, 11:33 PM
nice job guys, looks great but seems quite a bit slower..
24-07-2005, 11:45 PM
'Tis slower. Thought it was just my imagination.
24-07-2005, 11:46 PM
Nice one Ice and mojo! :2thumbs:
24-07-2005, 11:58 PM
Looking good Mike & Mojo. I don't have to scroll tooooo far to read all the blurb.
PTN. For all those that are still running IE, why not try Firefox for 'TABBED' browsing. That way you can have as many links/pages/photo's open at once..... even the 'Smilies'.
If you have 2 or 3 photo's open, you can do an add hock 'blink' test. Good fun. Plus, you can change your font size/colour, to whatever you like :D L. ;)
ps. No probs. with load speed either. L.
25-07-2005, 12:02 AM
much better, more complete, i prefer the font size. Your monthly challenges can be better displayed now to remind us!!
slice of heaven
25-07-2005, 12:11 AM
Seems toooo cold and squishy with the white background and small font.
Most of the posts are taken up by the avatar strip and sigs.
Bigger fonts in the post and smaller avatar strip might have been better maybe.
Its the posts that are important.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
If the site appears slower, it's just coincidence. The server slowed down just as we were updating the site.
I don't see how the fonts in posts could be smaller. They look the same size to me? Other font sizes for headings, etc. has changed but I didn't change the size of the post font.
Edit: yeah ok, it was smaller :) CSS mishap. Didn't even notice. Better now?
Thanks Ken. You have no idea how pleased I am that you said that :D
25-07-2005, 03:33 AM
Hey Terry, My font size hasn't changed. Why doesn't everyone just switch over to Firefox. They'll have full control over the font size/colour etc with it, like we do! Great work. I Like. :2thumbs: :D L.
25-07-2005, 06:44 AM
Works for me  Great job guys, very professional.
25-07-2005, 07:37 AM
Pat on the back for all involved. Thanks guys.
slice of heaven
25-07-2005, 08:12 AM
Thats a better sized font , thanks Mojo.
25-07-2005, 09:04 AM
Big improvement Mke & Terry.
I reckon the banner looks a 100% better.
looks good guys. :)
actually mike just one thing. the site menu font is a little too dark to be read on my machine here at work... maybe its just me tho :)
25-07-2005, 10:01 AM
nice job guys.
25-07-2005, 11:55 AM
Mike, I feel that all the links at the left of the page would be better placed (in a non scrolling section if possible) at the top of the page under the Iceinspace banner with fly out submenus. That way they wouldn't scroll off the page and also wouldn't encroach on the space available for posts. Take a look at the way the main items are presented on the Telstra Bogpond site for an example although theirs still scroll with the page.
25-07-2005, 12:01 PM
One easy fix Slick is to reduce clutter in our Sigs. I've just cleaned mine up to help. It's a start anyway!
25-07-2005, 12:14 PM
I agree with acroplite's point and and to avoid the problems of using frames with search engines, if you set the content to be in a <div> element with the overflow setting, then you can get you top row and left column to stay where they are. We only scroll through the content ie forum section.
for example. have a look at a quick job i did for a mate at http://vichomes.com/homes.aspx
The top stays here, but you can scroll throught the content
This is for asp or asp.net, not sure for php as i have done no programming in php at all!
DIV id="divDetails" style="OVERFLOW: auto; HEIGHT: 395px" runat="server"
25-07-2005, 12:16 PM
Nice work Mike and Terry.
not bad dave. we could keep the banner up the top...
there are of course proas and cons to that. it'd be prettier for one but youd lose text space... the info on the left overflows the page on a typical screen setup so that would need to be reduce or it still needs to scroll.
slice of heaven
25-07-2005, 12:40 PM
Thats the go Ken
The main reason for my comment was because of the small fonts. The posts seemed to be insignificant in relation to the avatar and sig strips.
Mojo altered the font size and the scale is much better.
25-07-2005, 12:40 PM
Nope, I don't like it... Sorry!! Too much wasted space and the forum get's too squished on my screen. However it seems I have a minority view, so don't worry too much!
25-07-2005, 12:46 PM
Hey Mike and/or Tony
Oooop's I figured it, I wasn't logged on previous to this post, I see it now
25-07-2005, 01:02 PM
I also think/feel but then again it might be just me, that the lil online icon thingy should go back up to beside the members userName. It looks out of place where it is now. Having it beside the userName emphasizes what it is.
Love the Doh! icon
regards... still think the text is a lil small but then again my monitor is set to 1280x1024
25-07-2005, 01:28 PM
It's slower for me..But like Terry said, it's to do with the server. The font look's the same to me, no probs there. I have to scroll left/right a little bit to see the whole page, but only to read a thread, or reply. The site menu box top left...is very hard to read the text over the blue colour. But when you put the mouse cursor over it, when the text light up, it's only just readable. I dont mind the new look, but I didn't mind the new look either.
25-07-2005, 01:32 PM
Hi guys, thanks for the feedback so far.
That was just last night, the server seemed to be slow at the time. Seems normal for me today.
As mojo posted, the CSS for the posts was accidently overwritten, but it's back to normal now. So if it looks any different than you remember, it's your imagination :) It's now the same size as it always was.
Thanks for the suggestions - i'm not inclined to change the design again now, i'd prefer to live with it how it is for a few months and see if there's major need to change. I just don't have time to go through another redesign cycle right now :P
You've only lost 180px due to the left bar Robby, and the width is now variable with your resolution so if you maximise the window or run a higher resolution, you'll get more room for forum display. I'm sorry you don't like it, but integrating the site and forums was more important than losing a small amount of real-estate.
Mojo will be most upset that you don't like his new LED graphics :D
Get that smug look off your face Terry! :D
Thanks again for your feedback, please keep it coming. Any major disasters or major dislike may be addressed, but for now I need to get back to doing some real work for a while :)
you still on 640x480 john? puter prob not yet fixed?
you forgot bout the colour of the site menu box mike.... gunna change it so it can be read? :P
25-07-2005, 01:45 PM
I've got that scroll left/right thing too but I'm not changing resolution again.
I like the info/links down the side. They will remind us of other things while we read down through the posts (The Camp for example hehe! Hint, Hint).
Would be nice to have some Astro pics down the left side in the loooooong blank area though!
Generally, I like it!
25-07-2005, 01:45 PM
About an hour ago, I had a go at just re-installing the original driver again rather than look for the up-dated version for my vid card. It's working (so far) Now running at true coloue 32 bit, but still at my original 800X600 On start-up having 3 different splash screens coming up saying you need to un-install this...cant find driver for that etc etc lol. Something to do with missing Vnetsup.vxd/Vredir.vxd/dfs.vxd I aint' that cluey as to what that all means.
its network stuff... found this on the MS site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2Fsupport%2Fwind ows%2Ftshoot%2Fstartup98%2Fcauses%2 Fvnetsupvxd.asp
25-07-2005, 01:59 PM
Your a real Library of information LOL!!!
just doing my job sir... hope it helps :)
25-07-2005, 02:41 PM
Ta ving. Now copied to my puter. info to be used at a later date.
Overflowing div's would be nice if all browsers handled them the same. I was playing around with overflowing the post area for very wide posts last week, but internet exploder doesn't handle overflow properly unless the div is a of fixed size.
25-07-2005, 03:27 PM
Wanna throw some Astro pics down the bare looking left side of the screen! Be nice to fill it with awe-inspiring Nebs and Galaxies!
the extra pics will slow things ken...
the more pics, the slower it loads :)
25-07-2005, 03:47 PM
My smilies aint' workin'...??
25-07-2005, 04:37 PM
Terry, I suggest <DIV id="divDetails" style="OVERFLOW: auto; HEIGHT: 600px;WIDTH"800px;FONT:20;background:BLUE;COLOU R:WHITE"> make sure the little smilies are there and then bobs your uncle
target the pages for use with the new and improved ie4.0 for running on the stunning and beautiful and yet stable win 95!!
25-07-2005, 04:40 PM
Everything looks fine to me.
You guy's with the font size problem, You can look up and see the Sun 93 million miles away, but you cant read a font 2 feet in front of you?
I LIKE IT.....
25-07-2005, 04:45 PM
thats a good point Mike, nicely put!!!!
no for the post area. the area you're reading this now. overflow works fine for fixed width in internet exploder, but the post area can't be fixed width.
microsoft has a lot to answer for. the world would be a better place if everybody used mozilla/firefox and linux.
25-07-2005, 06:09 PM
I'm sorry mojo the world would be an even better place if everyone used Mac's and Safari :)
25-07-2005, 06:26 PM
I like the new look and features, even though i have only just joined, the new color looks great
And i'm glad you kept the same ice in space logo :D
slice of heaven
25-07-2005, 06:33 PM
Firefox is fine by me
25-07-2005, 06:37 PM
Welcome to our little forum on the prairie Tidalphase! :gday: :welcome: I really like your avatar by the by :fishing: :)
25-07-2005, 06:42 PM
I have no problems with the fonts, but I do have problems with the width, to me having the menu on the left hand side makes the forum feel quite squishy and restricted. You know the feeling you get on a crowded bus when people just keep moving closer and closer to you and you have no where to move? no..... well feels like that :P
Now I have to go out and buy a 19" Monitor to get the full screen back again.
Safari being Konqueror. That's fine too :) I love Konqueror.
25-07-2005, 06:57 PM
mojo, sorry, you obviously missed the sarcasm of my post. With the comments on size of fonts, i was having a go at the people that thought things were too small, too large, too round, too square, too blue etc
i was suggesting that we "upgrade the lot to 800 x 600 resolution, insist upon people using ie4.0 and windows 95. have it in blue and white, but don't forget the smileys"
lmao. Can't believe I missed that.
25-07-2005, 07:49 PM
still a noobie to forums, what is IMAO?
25-07-2005, 08:07 PM
thanks rajah, for pointing me in the right direction. between "L"mao and IMHO, this new fandangled language is hard to keep up with. Heres me as an innocent noobie thinking theye are telescope parts!!!!
25-07-2005, 08:26 PM
you wanna know what LMFAO means??:D
25-07-2005, 08:30 PM
you are a card!!!! f stands for frigid.
just read your reply re dobs and eq's. very good and balanced! i like.
it is what i have been thinking for a while!
25-07-2005, 08:38 PM
'That was just last night, the server seemed to be slow at the time. Seems normal for me today.' unquote.
Today it's been the slowest Iv'e ever seen it!? I'm on dial-up tho. ?
And I repeat: MY SMILIES ARE NOT WORKING!!!!!!! ????? (the one's in the "more" list)
25-07-2005, 08:40 PM
Thanks Dave..........."my smilies ARE NOT WORKING!!!!"
25-07-2005, 09:12 PM
 mr asimov sir:doh:
are these ones working? or are you trying to add the ones at the bottom.
25-07-2005, 09:14 PM
Iceman and mojo.. top work..
looks excellent, fluid, intuitive and inviting. No gripes at this stage ;) :P
25-07-2005, 09:23 PM
No real worries Mike. I'm just an old bugger that's resistant to change...!! :violin: I just feel it's a bit cluttered now, but I'll get used to it.. :D Good to have a more integrated site though... Keep up the good work.
25-07-2005, 09:32 PM
Dear Dave...I'm impressed you can upload a screen shot! What part of "The one's in the "more" list" do you not understand!?:innocent: See the word more at the bottom left of the smilie's box?? ;) Those one's are not working, *sigh* :D
25-07-2005, 09:32 PM
I love it great work guys. it sure is an improvement!
25-07-2005, 09:34 PM
Terry, i think from memory? that Konquerer uses the same open source unix/linux code/core to put their gui on as safari, not completely sure. Safari is cool - you can get it to emulate at least 5 other browsers (including Konquerer, IE - and even firefox in the latest version I think?) using a command line/terminal window - in fact simultaneously! great for optimising a site for all the browsers ;) I have worked a little bit for a little web design biz in the past - and optimising for all the browsers at once frankly did my head in - especially netscape! (good browser tho) :) so I know whats its like!
25-07-2005, 09:38 PM
'testing' AAAAH! even doing it the way as suggested in your screen shot Dave, they dont work...I guess I'm stuck with the 20 at the bottom of this box..:confuse3:
25-07-2005, 09:47 PM
Andrew, do you mean it feels like being in economy on a Virgin blue flight and your not a midget? ;)
25-07-2005, 09:48 PM
Taking a bloke's smilies away is like burning his telescope! AND Ken's fav. one is missing!? the band. But even if it was there EYE couldn't use it anyway! I'm not happy!
25-07-2005, 10:02 PM
Asimov, my are ok.
pressing and holding "shift" and "prnt scrn", or "alt and "prnt scrn" allows you to capture your screen. paste it into word or excel or picture software and go from there.
good for troubleshooting and letting people see what you are seeing
25-07-2005, 10:29 PM
Oh Dave....One day you will learn how sarcastic I can be lol.....Iv'e got me own screen shot soft-ware thanks.....been doing it for years!? No good showing you what I can see...Look at a blank bit of paper with some words on it....that's what I see...WITH NO SMILIES!!
25-07-2005, 11:13 PM
THE BAND IS STILL IN HERE!!!
:rockband: :rockband: :rockband: :rockband: :rockband: :rockband: :rockband: :rockband:
JUST TO PROVE IT HERE IS THE WHOLE ORCHESTRA
Safari uses the Konqueror engine to render html. Apple slap on their own GUI obviously.
But Firefox is the browser of choice. Konqueror is great but NQR. I only worry about Firefox, IE & Konqueror for web design. It's 99% of the browsers.
26-07-2005, 06:01 AM
Your right - i found this after i posted that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_(web_browser) but it also said this quote "Some Apple improvements to the KHTML code are merged back into the Konqueror project" at least safari is not a big fat clunker like IE
There is a version of firefox for mac of course, that is quite nice as well :)
Ive done so little of that stuff for ages - my poor old site only works properly in IE - will have to do a bit of rebuilding :( some of the code is not recognised as proper html anymore its so old. maybe i should drop out like evryone else and just get an "off the shelf" site heheh
26-07-2005, 08:37 AM
Looks good guys. Great work.
26-07-2005, 08:39 AM
It looks fantastic and I really like the "links" on the side of the page.
Well done !!
the sarcasms so thick in here you could cut it with a nail file!
thanks for fixing the site menu colour guys... perfect now :)
oh and my fav smilies still ere... :poke:
26-07-2005, 11:59 AM
yup... maybe terry did it.
i'm wondering what you're talking about, too.
lay off the Astrobelle juice, Vingster :drink:
26-07-2005, 02:01 PM
You made a great web site better.
One of the best out there.
The new look is great. I don't have any objections to the font size. Well done.
By the way can you tell me about this Firefox software.
astrobelle juice is white! she is a cow you know!
ok it goes like this... top left of the screen is the "iceinspace site menu" right?
ok now the difference in the colour of the background of the menu and the text was not....(vague asrto term ) contrasty enough (the text was a mid grey) and was hard to read till you did a mouseover.... the text is now white making it easy to read.
i am not going crazy... :reindeer:
26-07-2005, 02:23 PM
Nice job on the webby Mike and all involved....very nice.
26-07-2005, 08:32 PM
Neat and easy to read and peruse. Good work iceman, pat yourself on the back. :innocent:
26-07-2005, 08:48 PM
 Nice work. Just wish I had time looking through it all. Need a quick monthly accurate sky gazing guide as family and work cut in on most of my time.
But keep it up and keep it simple with links names.
26-07-2005, 09:30 PM
Mike, Have been in contact with Mojo re; the different "rendering", is that right?, with my Firefox "profiles". Have sent him 2 x screen shots to show him what happens. One SITE MENU,comes out as white print on dark blue, = O.K., the other one comes out as black printing on dark blue = YUK.... This is extremely hard to read. So I use a "profile" that works! :help3: But that's not right, is it? They should all display correctly, ie; the same colours etc etc...Has nothing to do with cache, as mine is cleared automatically, each time I close down.
Regards, L. :D
ps. Kismet, Goto (www.mozilla.org) for the best open source browser, (Firefox), & Thunderbird eMail prog. Heaps better & SAFER than IE or OE. You can get lots of extras too.......PM me for more if needed. L.
pps. David, You are going mad. :poke: ...... Not really. A few others besides me, have mentioned similar symtoms.
ppps. Had no probs. with previous version of IIS.
26-07-2005, 10:39 PM
The site looks great Mike.As said above, you've made a great site even greater.
27-07-2005, 01:00 PM
very classy, very professional. The new site has a smooth new look and feel
27-07-2005, 02:26 PM
To tell you the truth, I reckon it's the friendly people & the atmosphere that make's this forum great! the way the site look's is secondary to me.
27-07-2005, 08:22 PM
hi mike i like the new look although had small prob with site menu same as RAJAH235 except the writing was red on blue, couldn't read it,but after clearing history and emptying cache(thks kearn)its now white on blue and totally readable
27-07-2005, 08:53 PM
Ditto. Contrary to what my comp. settings told me. After manual cache delete, all is O.K. again, re; the colour. But am still having the rating & quick link menu box prob.. Thanks Mojo....:2thumbs: :D L.
Same here I like the new look. :)
30-07-2005, 06:34 AM
