just thought I'd show off my xmas present to myself :D

I was surprised how big it was :eyepop: . It's clear tonight so I'll give it a whirl, even with the moon out.

pictured next to ye old trusty 32mm plossl for comparison

I had to add an extra 1.25kg counterweight on the base of the lightbridge for it

Feels indulgent, eh?

Enjoy.

Well done Gav !
It's certainly very special glass, kind of like an 85mm L huh? ;) :)

Look forward to catching up with you at the pony club sometime.

Enjoy, Gavin. I am confident you will be gobsmacked. I still am, after two nights observing with mine.

Nah, indulgence is when you buy 2 of them, one for viewing and the other as a counterweight :eyepop:(extreme jealousy) ;)

Cheers

i gave it a whirl last night before the moon came up.

very cool. it's good with the mega wide field of view to just lazily push the scope around (especially in lmc/smc). kinda like looking through a very big window and you just see all sorts of stuff drift by.

I can't really imagine I'll use anything more than the 13mm and 7mm from now on.

heh, quite cheap actually compared to 85mm :scared:

Nice buy Gavin, nothing like a purchase of expensive glass to cure a dose of spendthrift fever....

I was pondering one of these for next year too - is it worth a review given your the first person I know to start using one?

There are others on here too who have the Ethos.
Rod (Rodstar) and I think Geoff (Starkler) have it and love it.
Check out Rod's thread. (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=26892)

John Banberry (ausastronomer) has had extensive use of one (at the Texas Star Party with Al Nagler). He now is in possesion of one as well and has written a mini report in his threads.
Do a search for John's threads.

I suppose it won't be long before a proper review will be written up.

Not I ...

At snake valley a proud new ethos owner came over to my truss dob hoping to bribe me with it for a look through my scope. It worked

I got to spend a good hour using it but sadly it is not mine.

I'm not really knowledgeable enough about the technical aspects of eyepieces for any sort of review. Rod & John would be way better.

Rodstar

John Bambury and Iceman did a review of the 13mm T6 Nagler, the 14mm Pentax XW and 14mm Meade 4000 series Ultra Wide about 18+ months ago on IIS. It would be interesting if they did a Part II report to bring the Ethos into the equation.

At the end of the day, part of any review of the Ethos would be a comparison with the aforementioned alternative eyepieces at that same focal length.

Gavin, how did you find the Ethos performed on Mars? I have been extremely impressed by on axis performance....really as good as any planetary eyepiece I have used.

I didn't try mars as it was still quite low when I was out but i might try tonight.

That was my new baby. I'd brought the bino to Snake Valley & not my 14" so it was temporarily orphaned. I knew I'd find someone willing to take it off my hands for a bit.

I have had it for just over three months now, & enjoyed every session with it. It is just a great all-around eyepiece.

Wonders if Phil is getting a kickback from TV for all the sales he generated by lending out his Ethos....

I would happily accept a second Ethos so I could binoscope them on a regular basis - much as I enjoy borrowing Scott's, but he is about to take it back to the US, along with his good self. :mad2:

Hi Sejanus,

Congratulations on the 13mm Ethos.

After having been lucky enough to spend some time with Al Nagler first at the
Texas Star Party and then at Riverside looking through one of the prototypes,
I purchased one as soon as they became available. As it transpired, some
colleagues kindly refunded my cash and presented one to three of us back
in October.

I got to use it most extensively for a week under exceptionally dark skies in October
on an 18" Obsession. This is certainly a brilliant eyepiece.

Also present with me in October was Monte Wilson. Monte kindly
allowed me to use his 31mm Type 5 Nagler. Next to that eyepiece, the
13mm Ethos looks physically dimmunitive! :)

Anyway, enjoy it, you have a winner.

Best Regards

Yes the 13mm Ethos - is huge!
This is like back in the days when televue first released their naglers:They were huge like the original big size 13 mm Type 1 Nagler as compared to the small or tiny 13 mm Type 6 Nagler in the photograph. The 13mm ethos is slightly bigger than the original 13 mm Type 1 Nagler in the photograph on the left.
Televue have shrunk the naglers down from dinosaur size to small size.they must have done this to save production costs and with newer and better glass,

I presume there is a Jar of Coles Tomato sauce in every Australian kitchen for it to be used to highlight Eyepiece scale.

"That new 17mm Delos, Is it a big bugga?".

"Yeah Mate, 3/4 the size of a Coles mate!"

:D

Everywhere else we use the agreed international standard.

funny about the discussion about the ethos and planetary observation as just a couple of nights ago i had the 13 ethos out on mars and though the conditions where somewhat average i could make out dark patches on the surface
when i switched to my pentax xw 10 the features where not visible

Naaa:rolleyes: , those sizes are tiny.
Look at the Meade UWA 30 and 40mm ones.
They weigh a ton and are huge. :eyepop:

Which manufacturer is going to break ranks and offer the first 3" barrel format eyepiece I wonder... my money is on Explore Scientific.

They are about to release a 25mm 100 degree eyepiece. Although 3"-4" eyepieces already exist. Observatory eyepieces.

Just checked - the 14mm is still discounted to USD300. Brilliant!

Its lucky then that I got mine during Televues 20% sale, used the retailers 11% discount code, got 1.45 USD to my euro and my package didn't get hit by customs. Twas a home run :D

So I basically paid Explore Scientific prices for my Televues :D

With the price increses from Televue in January the current pricing in Europe for that lot is 4950 euro !! :eyepop: I paid less than 2500 euro :D

I never thought I'd be one for buying 100 euro+ eyepieces. I was quite happy with my Hyperions and thought the guys paying hundreds for eyepieces were mad.

However, as soon as I did the math last year when the sale was announced and checked the exchange rate I realised that this could possibly be the safest investment I ever made. :D

"this could possibly be the safest investment I ever made".
This is so true.Televue eyepieces are as good as gold.
Televue eyepieces are very liquid assets.
They sell so quick on forums like ice in space.
There are a lot of televue fans or groupies who go mad and buy them as soon as they go on sale in the second hand market,
I got my 2 ethos eyepieces for very good prices.
You've done well to basically pay Explore Scientific prices for your Televues.
you could easily sell them for more than what you paid for them.

Calibos
11-02-2012, 02:39 AM
Of course when I looked through them I realised that maybe the guys prepared to pay hundreds for the 'Majesty Factor' 100º Eyepieces weren't so mad after all. The 100º field is breathtaking. Luckily for me I don't have to worry if the slightly better correction that the Ethos apparently have over the ES100's is worth the Televue Price premium over the ES.

I see you almost have the Golden Troika there already. The 21mm is an absolute beast isn't it. I'll admit to my own insanity. Sometimes I am known to take it out of the EP case even when I am not observing and sit down and just hold it and roll it in my hands and mumble something that sounds like..."My Preciousssssssss" :D

erick
11-02-2012, 09:44 AM
Sell them? Don't think so. When you're on a good thing, stick with it. My ES 14mm 100deg and my Panoptics are not for sale!

Congrats Keith, on your good deal!

Love me some "Majesty Factor". Televue has been selling it to you at exuberant prices since 2007.

Joking aside. Stay tuned for the ES 25mm 100 degree. Mr 21E, won't be the king of the hyper wides anymore. Assuming ES pull it off without too many compromises.

can't waiit to see it appear.
how will it compare to the ethos.

The 13mm Ethos is the best eyepiece I have and gives a magnificent view.
