And first photons indicate...WOW:eyepop:
Compared to the old 300D it's chalk and cheese.
Only tried standard photos so far, but soon to try it
on the back of the Mak.
Using "live view" will be heaven me thinks.:thumbsup:

Two things I've noted with a 400D

1) I think ISO 800 on bulb shots is the sweet point

2) Noise reduction is default on for shots > 30 seconds, (the camera will automatically take a dark frame for the same length as your exposure and subtract it) turning it off doesn't seem to dramatically decrease shots quality - but it halves exposure time. So maybe ignore it or at most take 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 , 10 minute dark frames and use these in DeepSkyStacker (Freeware)

Also suggest if you're imaging near mains - get a AC / DC converter.

I get your point, however this is the 40D not the 400D :)
Good thing is ALL the 300d accessories fit it and I have heaps.

Noted - just saying the 400D isn't a slouch, in a beginners hands a 1 hour shot looks like this:

g_day do you actually have the 400D?

I am looking to buy a DSLR for DSO imaging in the next couple of months and would like to know what you think of it.

I can get one brand new with usual extras and 18-55mm lens for AU$850 which sounds like a steal.

Yes - its a great camera for visual and so far in my newbie hands you can see its decent for astrophotography. If you do a custom mod to it - like I think Jase or Houghty did - mounting a mother of a peltier to the CCD to cool it to -40 celcius - well it turns into a whole different capability beastie!

Your price sounds excellent!
