Favourite Nagler?

I'm mainly interested in a range between 16mm and 22mm, but please chime in with any comments you might have for any of them. (I don't like the ones that tend to black-bean.)

Naturally I hope and expect that aficionados of other brands of wide field EPs will voice their indignation and tell me why I should buy theirs.

I've owned the 4.8mm, 9mm, 12mm and 22mm Nagler's. All are exceptional eyepieces. The 22mm was my favourite. Though, it delivered 127x mag in the C11 which I found too high power for many deep sky objects. Go with the 22!:thumbsup:

I'm no longer a visual guy, the only eyepiece I now own is an 9mm illuminated reticle.:D

I cannot get on with mine so am getting rid of them, black bar thing gets me - tried the 31, the 22, 17, 16, 12 and just can't get them to "work" for me.

Can't tell you what else since I am only at the "Ditch the Nagler" stage and still looking for replacements...

I've only used the 22mm and think it's a wonderful eyepiece. If you like long eye relief your choice is simplified, with the 17mm and 22mm Type 4 naglers being superior to the others in that regard. I can see almost the entire field at once when using the 22mm.

My experience with an 8.8mm Meade UWA leads me to steer clear of 80 degree eyepieces that have short eye relief - I don't see the point of paying for the field if it's not easy to see. (others will disagree of course)

Although I'm not a visual guy per sé, I love both my 17mm and 22mm Naglers.

20mm t5 works for me, the rest are all Pentax XW's... if your thinking of ditching
your Naglers check out the Pentax XW range, just avoid the 20mm XW : )

31mm type V Grenagler aka Hand Grenade. You actually have to look around the eyepiece field. It's too big for a normal eye.

Arthur, I've been wondering about your problem with the Naglers and I'm guessing you stand for most of your observing? I'm always seated, so my eye is always steady and centered in the eyepiece. Just wondering why kidney bean bothers one observer a lot and another not at all.

I own the 2.5mm, 13mm, 22mm, 31mm, . The 2.5 does not get used that much. But all the rest i find myself using the 31 and the 13 are the ones i like the best. The 31mm is like looking threw a window not a port hole it is great. The only problem with the 31mm is the weight.

I have a 13mm t6 and this old 7mm .. I really like the 7 and find it is often
in the focuser .. its previous owner made the coment that it was one of
his most used and liked .

Arthur I used to suffer blackout badly .. my 27 pano was a woefull for a while , I folded down the eyecup and use my thumb and forefinger on the barrel to centre my eye around the eyelens and have not had a problem since .I got hold of a 27 mm pretoria recently and it was even worse
until I went the same way again .

The 7 and 13 have never been a problem because I tend to do this
anyway ,good luck :)

in the 16-22mm range 20mm T5 is my fave. The T4s are okay as well and the longer eye relief would be nice theoretically, but in practice I find them more awkward to use with the exit pupil having more spherical aberration (ie centre of fov starts blacking out once eye is close enough to see edge).
