On July 5/6, 02:51am (Friday morning) a very long, long duration grazing meteor was recorded on a meteor camera network in NW NSW. It took 21 seconds to travel from over Warren to half way between Mudgee and Sydney, where it left the camera fields, then at mag -5. It was moving too quickly (15 km/s) to be a satellite reentry (well above escape velocity) and showed no fragmentation. The initial entry angle was only 6 deg and unless there was significant deceleration after it left the cameras, it would have continued over the coast, reached 37km over the Tasman Sea, and then head back out into space. Presumably it was widely seen, crossing the coast between Sydney and Newcastle. Anyone see it?
