Sitting in the car waiting for school pickup (early) a mere 1km (if that) from RMC Duntroon. I hear that distinctive guttural growl.... I get out of the car.

5 F/A18s break into a bomb burst peel right over Duntroon at around 300 ft, breaking away with full afterburner on and up through the low cloud...

The crackle and roar is still in my ears...

Living in Canberra has benefits

They don't hold a candle to an experience I had at the Farnborough
air show 60yrs ago. They had a Canberra bomber which normally had
Rolls Royce Avons; it was a flying test bed for the Olympus engine.
It was painted all over matt black. I was stood at the fence about
40 metres from the runway. It took off from my right to left, and
unstuck about 40-50 metres to my right, and by the time it passed
in front of me it was about 10-12 metres off the ground when he stood
it on its tail and climbed precisely vertically until it disappeared into the clouds. I couldn't witness the spectacle properly because my eyeballs were vibrating so much, and every part of my body felt as though it had a massive [but benign] electric shock passing through it. The Olympus engines gave it about 260% of its normal power.

The Australian Defence Force will farewell Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin AC, Chief of the Defence Force with a four-ship F/A-18A/B Hornet flypast over Blamey Square,
Canberra on Friday, 6 July 2018 at 2.13pm.

The four F/A-18 A/B Hornet aircraft from Number 77 Squadron of Royal Australian Air Force Base Williamtown, near Newcastle, will approach Canberra from the south-
west and hold near Mt Stromlo.

The aircraft will then track over Parliament House in a box formation, along Kings Avenue to Blamey Square before heading off in a north-east direction over Mount
Ainsley before returning to RAAF Base Williamtown.

The four aircraft will fly no lower than 76 metres (250 ft) above ground level over Blamey Square and travel at a maximum speed of no faster than 833 kilometres per
hour (450 knots).

All flying is subject to change due to weather and operational requirements.

Well, Blamey Square is spitting distance from Campbell Primary where I was...(my altitude judgement was pretty good at least, even if I can't count)

Pity they couldn't do the flypast on Tuesday and accidentally drop something on a certain large house. The cheers would be deafening.

Wish I knew when there was going to be interesting aircraft flying around, I always seem to miss these things. Except a few months ago over Belconnen a slow circle by what looked like a Lancaster towing a Spitfire (they werent but similar look/vintage, hawker hudson maybe being towed, but no camera on me. Was mesmerised at how slow they were flying, beautiful planes.)

Gotta love military aircraft, I remember some years ago standing on the cliff at Byron watching Manta rays feeding in the surf, an F111 flew under us hugging the cliff face, saw it before even hearing any noise, gone in an instant.
