Arp 271 is a pair of similarly sized interacting spiral galaxies, NGC 5426 and NGC 5427. It is not certain whether the galaxies are going to eventually collide or not. They will continue interacting for tens of millions of years, creating new stars as a result of the mutual gravitational attraction between the galaxies, a pull seen in the bridge of stars already connecting the two. Located 90 million light-years away, the pair is about 130,000 light-years across.

The galaxies are each about 3' across, so not large.

I had some data from this object from about 4 years ago. I added another two hours at the star party. So two different cameras and 4 years separation.


Telescope: 12.5" Planewave CDK
Mount: AP900
Camera 1: QSI@-20---2 hours
Camera2: FLI Proline@-30----2 hours
FOV: about 20' x 20'
Processing: PixInsight


I still need some good luminance data to sharpen things up a bit more.

Excellent result Geoff. My..?.. arhem :whistle: radar was registering... but I think you have used it pretty well here, nice job on this, they really are a super looking pairing :thumbsup:

Very, very nice Geoff. Loving the colours and detail and all the little background galaxies in the field are an added bonus.

Compare yours to a 8.2 mt scope, very credibly
in my opinion. :)

Note: Dropping background brightness a notch would have allowed the...vermis to go past Mike's radar undetected ;)

Thanks Pete. There was a bit of a trade-off here between cropping to highlight the galaxies or leaving the galaxies smaller in a wider field.

You’ve no idea of all the various nefarious subterfuges I had to go through to get a halfway decent luminance out of some pretty average data.

Nice job, Geoff, thanks for sharing. Gotta love the ARP catalogue. I can't even see any artifacts caused by the decon so I think you did well there.

Thanks Paul. I have been improving my noise reduction techniques—no plastic background, some residual pleasing high frequency noise left in the background.
