Folks,

M83 needs no introduction, it's a beautiful subject and there have been many fine examples posted in this forum recently and in previous years.

This shot was my first proper (=long) project with the ZWO ASI178MM, with its tiny 2.4 micron pixels, hanging off the back of my SW Esprit 100. The 178 yields a little more resolution but also needs a little more exposure time to calm the noise than my usual weapon of choice (ASI1600), so this is over 10 hours of total exposure time. I'm sure I could have gotten away with less. Pixel peeping is a tough habit to crack...

Constructive criticism/processing tutorials always welcomed :D

Cheers,
Dunk

Thanks Glen! Ha is sneaking in through the red filter, no Ha subs to date.

That's a great image Dr. Duncan , congratulations. Even more astounding when one realises it was captured with a 4" inch scope and a 2.75 micron camera.

Cheers

Good one Dunk, who needs big scopes when you can make images like that.

Thanks Rob! Even tinier than 2.75 microns - 2.4 microns :D

Thanks Bill! Indeed, the troublesome newt sleeps tonight

Great work, I did a lot more hours on that subject and your images is just as good and your background is much less noisy. Great result.

like the processing and colour Dunk, it will be really interesting when you get a super night of seeing with that scope/camera combo!

cheers

Thanks Brett! Probably the sheer number of subs helped with the noise (240x 1min) but the camera is sub-2 electrons read noise also.

Thanks Russell! Never say never...as I’d collected the data over 3 nights, it was evident in processing/analysis that each night has its own characteristics. Of course there’s no substitute for cubic inches as they say, but I’m still pretty pleased with the results.

I’ve also been playing around with deconvolution but I’m not currently happy with my output. As such, this image features no such magic.

Nice work, Dunk! I like the colour. How did you do your colour calibration? Did you use the new PCC in PI?

In terms of criticism, the resolution looks a bit lacking... not sure if it's the smaller aperture of the 100, or perhaps the seeing wasn't so great. Did you do any deconvolution on the data?

Thanks Kevin!

Thanks Rob!

Thanks Lee! Yeah PCC with a few after tweaks. Seemed to come out OK.

Certainly feel I could use a bigger scope  but the seeing was what it was, I don’t get to be too choosy when I go bush, so long as it’s clear I’m thankful ;) I’ve started experimenting with deconvolution and may post an update when I’m happy, but would certainly be a first for me.
