I stumbled upon a feature in Deep Sky Stacker.
When the list of light frames appear click on one so it appears then drag the mouse around to select only a section of the image you wish to stack ...I just tried it with my M 83 I think it speeds things up although I have not made a specific comparison.
I dont know if there is any benefit to be obtained in respect of quality but certainly if my impression about doing the stack faster is correct then it may be handy in some cases...certainly the result with M83 was pleasing as a rather large gallaxy appeared in the final photo.
