What started out as a fanciful idea turned into an epic imaging run and I am still not sure I have all the data.

This image is of NGC1999 which is located just near M42 and is often overlooked as an imaging target. I imaged this target (http://paulhaese.net/IC427.html)a few years back with the wide field unit but was never really all that happy with the data and the field of view. This I think works better.

The image has just over 20 hours of data and most of that is the Ha data. It probably needs a bit more luminance and I will have to decide in the next few days if I want to add more to it. I note that Rolf did a significant amount more luminance and this brightened the image quite a lot compared to my attempt.

Click here (http://paulhaese.net/NGC1999.html) for larger resolution image.

I hope you enjoy.

Edit:Now with 24 hours of data, mainly luminance.

Looks pretty good Paul but it's an odd looking field that seems hard to get to the point where you say "this is how it should look". I imaged the waterfall nebula not so long ago with about the same amount of data and it looked similar to yours.

Cheers

Looks good to me - some of the red areas are quite intense. Although if you do get more luminance, I'll be interested to see the difference.

I think that the intensity of the colours works well in this image Paul. Particularly so with the strong contrast of the blue nebula against the deep red. A nice field indeed.

Exquisite!

Looks like a gold-mine for the Herbig-Haro Hunter.

Beautifully acquired and presented.

Really nice Paul, you’ve kept the dynamic range in a lovely way. Bright parts right and the dim faint Ha visible but not over done

That's a stunner Paul. Dark moody and shows off those seemingly quite violent Harbig areas.

It looks like a completely different object to some of the other renditions I've seen, Paul. The dark and brooding treatment works beautifully and the colours are lovely!

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks for the comments guys. I am continuing to collect data with a view to see what I can really get out of the data.

Thanks Rick. There are some interesting looking versions of this object. Last time I imaged it I found it looked fairly bland but I am working with more interesting data this time. Once I pick up a significant amount more I'll report back with my results. I think the luminance really adds to this object. The Ha and colour have their own unique looks, but the Lum seems to add life to the object, perhaps a smoother transition in areas and a nice light to the gas.

Good God I love that DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP red!

I really love the dark and moody - much more so than the flamboyant and vivid.

I have now added further luminance to this image and am quite happy with the look of the image. I have provided both smaller images for a comparison. Please click the link to see the bigger picture.

Going to be frank (Shirley not!) - I used to use the HST image of 1999 as my desktop image.

No word of a lie, I like yours more Paul!

New DT image :)

Absolutely awesome! It was a wonderful image before. Now it's really special.

It was good before Paul - even better now. Minor detail on presentation - the orientation has the waterfall nebula pretty much upside down. I would prefer it so that it looks like a waterfall but up to you of course.

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. I think I need a few more striations in the field to be GaBany like, but none the less I'll take the compliment.

Like any image though I am always critical of its flaws and there are a few present.

A fun exercise all the same.

A great looking photo Paul.

So much detail and I love the deep, rich colours.

Ross.
