Has anyone downloaded and successfully (or rather, repeatedly) been able to use the latest version of Stellarium (0.17.0) on PC? Every time I download it, it spends 5 minutes downloading "Microsoft Visual C++", which I've never seen before.

It will run once, then after you close it and reopen, it gives an error message about a missing "api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll" file (even though the file is on the computer) and refuses to open. Version 0.16.1 still installs and works fine without any tantrums - should I just be patient and wait for the bugs in the newest version to be ironed out, or is there a simple fix?

Wait for the fix.

Or use CdC (Cartes du Ciel).

Thanks Bojan, I'll be patient.

Yep, same issue for me. I downloaded 0.16 and all good.

Cheers,

Just be a temporary thing. I downloaded 0.17 after the new year and updated all the catalogs without issue.

Turns out I had my Windows Updater turned off (like, for the last 5 years), so after an hour or so of downloads and installs and restarts, I tried installing 0.17.0 again. It still loaded Microsoft Visual C++ (much quicker this time), and now appears to be working splendidly. Not sure exactly what the issue was, but obviously something needed some updating/tweaking. So Windows Updates are actually worthwhile every half a decade or so - who'da thunk it.
