View Full Version here: : Nuclear attack:- What to do?

The people in Hawaii were subjected to a false alarm and it was forty minutes before they were told it was a false alarm. Apparently there was panic etc. I would like to think that in Oz we would react better, but Cairns had a tsunami warning concerning just the shoreline about 10 years ago and many people headed for the hills. (The sea did rise about 300mm.)
Anyway, a nuclear blast, what should U do? Well, my understanding is that many would survive the blast but would be killed over time because of the radiation. My best advice is to stay at home. Providing the home survives the blast, it will shield U from 90% of the radiation. These are mainly short-period decay particles from the blast and they will mainly clear from the sky in about two weeks. Even if the building has broken windows and dust blows in, the building will still be protecting you from the major proportion of the radiation. So stay at home, inside for 2 weeks and your chances of not getting cancer or other radiation inducted illnesses will be greatly improved.
Don't go sightseeing or checking up on the relatives. A car will give some protection from radiation, but it is only slight compared to staying at home.
Anyway, I trust we have some smart guys on IIS and some may be ex-army. I have put up my 'strawman', on what is the best way to react according to what I have read on the subject of nuclear attacks.
Agree/Disagree with my advice or can U provide a better informed plan?

Hi Bob,
It must have been dreadful to be in Hawaii and receive that text message.
I recollect being in the US in the 80's and you would be driving listening to
the radio and an announcement would come over "This is a test of the
Emergency Broadcasting System". Then they would play a tone and then
it would sign off with, "This has been a test of the Emergency Broadcasting
System".
They would do the same on TV :-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdpLWML_tDU
The best plan is to help ensure that such an event never happens in the first place.
Even a limited nuclear exchange would be the worst day in the history of civilization.
If you new such a threat is imminent and you had time, the first thing you would do is fill the bath tub with water.
This 1959 US Civil Defence training film is a reminder of the spectre of nuclear holocaust during the Cold War :-

Some of the effects from a nuclear detonation are chronicled here :-

I can recall a report that a Russian Nuclear Technician ( many were frantically trying to shut it down ) was below the Chernobyl Reactor, just outside the reactor walls when it exploded .... he was instantly vaporized by the blast ..... talk about being at ' ground zero '
What would I do ..... PRAY

As Australia is a miniscule player in world affairs, and therefore probably
a secondary, or more likely, a tertiary target, I think it highly likely that
a number of nukes would already have been delivered to numerous
primary targets around the world, and that humanity would already be in the pooh, to put it mildly. I suppose that "they" might use a small one to take out Pine Gap, but at least it is in a very low population density area.

We returned from Hawaii a few days ago - glad we missed out on the excitement. Driving in Honolulu was exciting enough - lots of foriegn tourists driving on the wrong side of the road in a crowded city.
We had a good time but have been looking at south pacific destinations which are cheaper and less crowded AND they're not in any missile flight path.

Sad, but a truly possibly end to Humanity.
This explains the film based on Neville Shutes book.

A single missile would probably be taken out by defence systems before reaching it's target.
A relative in the US defence business says there's no way anything would get through; I don't know what to think of that advice but he is an engineer with a large US corporation.

We're a long way down the list of targets. Australia barely registers in the northern hemisphere.
You might think that, and I'm sure you're right.
But they could actually target us first just to make the point of proving to the world that they have the technology safe in the knowledge that we don't really matter all that much on the world stage.
If that happened, it would be quite interesting to see how fast the big boys (military wise) ditch their little down-under brothers!

I often wonder when we have exciting "news" what is really happening that is perhaps really going to effect our lives.
This "mistake" is most curious and really how come it was not shut down in a matter of minutes.
I suggest there is possibly more to this ...
Now who could benefit?
Maybe there is someone lobbying to sell a better system, .... I wonder how share trading was effected...
Really in this world of instant communication are we to believe this alledged mistake could not have been fixed in a very short time?
The sky is falling who was selling hard hats?

I suspect the hightened concern with NK suits US as it gives it an excuse to have a few Navy vessels in the region.
Given China is building a decent blue water Navy the problem will ramp up or at least we will be presented with a falling sky for the region ...
Who is to say this recent alert mistake is not somehow one part of the game.

It is a shame that it has to last 30 minutes that people were told it was a mistake.
In such critical cases, there should be better drills and software should be tested more thoroughly.
The novel (of which movies exist) On the Beach (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Beach_(novel)) is about a nuclear attack in which Australia is about the only place where it is relatively safe.
Because virtually all targets are in the northern hemisphere, so Australia is still relatively safe.
But the biggest nuclear threat is not Kim Jong Un (he should stop his nuclear weapons program anyway), but Donald Trump. Last week the Trump administration declared to make use of nuclear weapons easier. Combine this with the mental health of this 'president'.
And another issue the US where there is a nuclear waste dome built in the 1950s in the Marshall Islands which is a ticking time bomb.

I heard an analyst talking on the radio about taking out missiles.
Trump has quoted 95% chance of taking out incoming warheads.
In testing there is about 10% max strike rate so to get the 95% mark they use 10 missiles to get these statistics.
He explained these tests were done with dummy missiles with countdowns and already known trajectory so as long as whoever uses these nukes give us about a couple of hours warning and full trajectory details we might have a half a chance.
I still think duck and cover is the best option or perhaps just be friends.

'"The Road" I believe bleakly sums up our end game pretty well, be it from small stuff (nuclear ) or a big long period comet slamming us , extreme volcanism, its all going to end badly .
Tsunamis seem to be not taken to seriously by many despite all the recent stuff happening , I was diving in vanuatu when the 2013 tsunami rolled in , A friend was in town when the warning sirens went off 99,9 % of the people ignored it , some ran , he had to ask what it was about .

The cities would be the main targets. Move about 200km inland.
Or you can hope for the best with duck and cover while listening to Gary Moore's Nuclear Attack.
Theres websites where you can play around and simulate the effects of various nuclear explosions across a map, such as this one (http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/?&kt=5000&lat=-33.8653988&lng=151.1516173&hob_opt=1&hob_psi=5&hob_ft=17519&casualties=1&fallout=1&ff=50&fatalities=864456&injuries=1395074&psi_1=3653239&zm=11)
One thing that suprises me about the simulation is the area of effect for 3rd degree burns - on the simulation I linked it is almost 25km radius for 3rd degree burns.
Fallout depends on height of the explosion, detonate close to the ground to maximise fallout, but then you lose the air blast radius.
So I think the thing to do would be to find a place where you won't be cooked by the heat, and which is as structurally sound as possible to withstand the air blast. Beyond that muster up your Mad Max education to survive ;)

Third wave was the target level of nuclear capacity. That's the theory that waves one and two would be destroyed mostly or completely.
So having enough missile to enable three waves of attack on a target was what usa and Russia relied on. Overkill somewhat.
Until usa realised that Russia had no detection radar over the pole as it had been sold off by the incumbent army in siberia for vodka and women.
Most of the minutemen silos in usa are now survival shelters and empty.
Britain keeps a trident submarine off Murmansk to keep Russia in check.
A nuclear war is likely to be a 100 percent extinction event and that's probably what happened to Venus as far as I'm concerned.
Radiation would not kill all of us. But nuclear winter would.

I have thought of putting in a bomb shelter up North not for bombs but for a place to hide in the case of bush fire firstly and maybe the ultimate storm.
However having nearly been trapped in one bush fire the idea of burying a shipping container seems appealing.
It would not cost all that much I expect.

Underground bunkers won't help you in a bushfire Alex. Unless you have some way of keeping the smoke out and some fresh air to breathe. A few years ago in Victoria people hid in bunkers during a bushfire and they all died of smoke inhalation.

Put it this way:
All domestic electronics fried.
No electricity - all the utilities systems will have been fried. Along with the phone network and mobile networks and internet. No gas either as the equipment supplying you will be fried.
No running water unless you’re a DIY with a rainwater tank.
Cars built after 1980 will have had the electronics fried.
Suffice to say unless you are self sufficient living in the boondocks on acreage, you have about 4 days, a week at max. Two or three maybe if you have a big bag of rice tucked away and some tinned foods.
By the second week if you’re still alive you’ll be defending whatever you have at gunpoint from gangs determined to take it by any means - and they will.
By 3 weeks 90% will be dead either by dehydration or starvation - or murdered.
The rest... well ... between disease and radiation sickness ... if you call that survival.. no thanks.

Reminds me of when I was in Japan last year for 3 months, I left a week after I had been hearing all the North Korea talk and how Japan was at risk. Woke up on the second night around midnight to what sounded like a loud air raid siren. I was convinced a nuke was on its way. Googled "Japan North Korea" and some news showed up like "Japan would have 8 minutes till missile reaches" or something. This just confirmed it for me haha, sure got the adrenaline going...
