Hi,
looking at buying a OSC camera for planetary imaging and having a go at longer focal length small DSO objects (planetaries, small galaxies etc) using a C11.

Wondering what the recommendations would be considering the dual purpose.. 224/174/178/290 chips? 178 seems the biggest size, but smallest pixels, 290 seems lowest noise, but small chip?

Already have a QHY9s and full set of filters, so don't need a large chip for general dso stuff.

The ASI224MC is a highly regards planetary camera, using high frame rate video files. It is also capable for normal sub lengths. Its pretty cheap too, about $440 i think. Depends on your budget, the ASI1600MC-C is a good OSC cooled camera, very low noise, good allround OSC for planetary and DSO. It is on sale at Bintel at the moment for $1399, which is $200 below normal price.

The ASI1600 is a good sensor for a variety of reasons. It just to clarify, it is a micro 4/3rds sensor and a bit smaller than an APS-C.

APS-C is ~1.6x crop factor of full frame whereas M4/3 is 2x crop factor. This means that it has a quarter of the surface area of a full frame sensor.

the 178 would great for planetary without a Barlow on your scope. Would be significantly oversampled for DSO, but you could use binning.

Definitely a ASI224 you have to consider frame rate for planets and image scale . 224 will do 150fps on Jupiter easily and image size is good just have a look at the images it produces .

Yeah depends on what image scale you're after Gary.

The 224 is the most sensitive so far. I also have the 178 but I haven't tried it out for planetary yet, as I bought it for DSO...
