View Full Version here: : Creating an astro consumer digital camera list

I am in the process of deciding whether to create a camera database/look up table for my Asterism program or have the user enter channel mulitplier values for their camera and write that to a file, to be used over and again.

If the list of cameras, typically in use, is not overly long a dropdown list and LUT of prepopulated values might be more convenient. Adding to the LUT over time.

There are obvious choices among the Canon family, though some may not be used widely these days...

20Da, 60Da 450D. 1000D, 1100D, 5D - MK II and III, 7D... as a starting point

Nikon

Fuji

Pentax

Sony

It would be helpful to know what people are using and which types are popular.

Which consumer digital camera are you using for astro, macro or micro photography?

Having asked the question, I see the risk... I am not asking about individual camera preference or the merits of one over the other.

Hi Rowland,

Beyond taking a census of all users I'm not really sure how you'd get a thorough answer to that and even then what you'd want to do with any missing models. If you were talking of Canon & Nikon, I'd say list every model. They are virtually all used /mentioned as used.

Take a look at the drop menu on the right hand side of the screen on this camera sensor dynamic range comparison webpage ....

PS: Some models are duplicated because the sensor is tested in Full-Frame and Cropped mode where the camera has this feature on-board. I'm not sure how that would affect your data.

Thanks JA. Understand. I did consider a census and perhaps that's the best approach. I could guess many of the models and add as I go or as requested. My thought was to compile a list of common types in use and build on that. I need to enter 9 parameters per camera and also create a script to autopopulate the LUT. Still, it's a lot of work.

Thanks Glen will add to the list.

EDIT: Each model has unique channel multipliers and all that's required for the process.

Outside of cooled astro cams, I use my Fujifilm X-E1 and X-A3 for widefield. They're very accomodating, and use the same Sony sensors that Nikon uses. Being mirrorless, they give you that much more backfocus which makes it possible to use other brand lenses with a simple adapter. They also seem to let through more Ha than you're typical Canon.

I am currently using a Sony A7r2 and a Fuji XT2. The A7r2 is the better of the 2 but the Fuji does a good job as well.

I love my Nikon D5100. It's still a popular camera even though it's been around since 2011. Takes a lovely astro-image. I know there are plenty of D5200's around even though they have the Toshiba sensor and have an amp glow problem. The D5300 is popular and very good. I've not seen many D5400s used but the D5500 and D5600 are getting some use over at Cloudnights.
Hope that helps,
Cam

Thank you. Appreciate you all going out of your way to contribute. Except for Pentax a representative cross section - DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, modded and unmodded.

On reflection, it is unlikely that someone might use more than 5 cameras, in which case the user can create up to 5 unique camera names in Asterism and populate the matrix themselves.

The camera list can also be edited from the main dialog.

Modded cameras might need some channel adjustments, particularly the R channel.

A few screen shots for context.

Thanks. As far as the range of brands go, that just about does it.

Although not modded, the Pentax K-1 is a reasonably priced full frame camera that uses the same Sony made sensor as both Sony and Nikon and has some very good older manual lenses available.

That seems like a reasonable cross section. Thanks again.
