The Forest Floor

Autumn and Winter are my favourite time of the year for photography. The colours of Autumn in landscapes, and the opportunity to get into the forest for the amazing small world of Fungi.

I'd assume some species would only show up during the late Autumn / early Winter months but may not like the Mid winter conditions ?
I dont know, but seeing your into the season early, thought you may be after some that may only be around during a short window and adding to the collection, as I havent seen some of these species from you before !

Good to see some of these coming through again & always look forward to the compositions you create. Top stuff :thumbsup:

Yes many species are seasonal, and have a small window within that season. From watching this year it seems to be dependent on rain, and temperature. We had a very dry Autumn up until the past fortnight with zero rain, and the fungi that was so prolific last year just didn't show. Others that I didn't see that much of in early Autumn were abundant.
But with the rain and the drop in morning temps to below 10deg they have started to show.
I have been concentrating on Schlerophyll bush land lately, but will make the drive to some of the mountainous rain-forest areas to find some of the more colourful varieties shortly.

It's intense, isn't it. But it gets better Bob. When it drops the spores, which are brown, that whole gill structure changes colour.

Well, that is, I guess how it works, like most plants or lifeforms, Trevor, losing life once there 'deed' is done - so to speak, What fascinating is why it shines/glows in the 1st place, is it trying to attract something, , bugs maybe, or just simply put down to 'beauty in nature, huh, would make an excellent entry in this months Comp' :thumbsup:

very nice trevor, you really have that macro lens worked out. we are about to get our first cold snap after some light rain so i will be out shooting some in the next week or so. Very much looking forward to it

We have had the cooler weather for about 3~4weeks now, after a very long, dry and warm, Summer and Autumn. So I do appreciate the anticipation of being able to finally get out into the woods and paddocks hunting. This morning was a chilly 4deg :-)

The phosphorescence seems to be about getting bugs and snails to eat it, and having them expel the spoors elsewhere. To get the glow-in-the-dark fungi in pristine condition is the challenge, because after the first decent night of lighting up, they start to get eaten. Moths to a candle effect.

These are the same fungi as in the glowing picture, and any of them would have made a nice night shot. Had I been less lazy.
The beauty of them is that they a large and can be up to 30+cm across, where some others are tiny little things.

Trev went up to Springbrook and very few Fungi as its so dry at the moment too dry.

Yes mate, i have been hearing that from Fungi friends in the north of NSW and southern Q'land. But some are in for rain this weekend. At least they were promised that it was so ;-)

Well well, Now the whole east coast of Aus has had a drenching, there should be fungi's sprouting up everywhere, :thumbsup:
Even Tassie is having a wet-down, particularly the NW, upto 100mm or more .
Your in Devonport Trevor, right in there, hope you not prone to flood waters ?

Yup, Devonport, and we are getting a good soaking.
Reports to date: Just over the hill at Forth the Caravan Park was evacuated. Down the road at Latrobe (a place I fossick regularly, the worst flood since 1929. And this is just 2 of many local events.
So, a beautiful, still, overcast day here with the threat of more.

Launceston's residents imagineing 24,000 Volkswagens worth of water passing them by every second :)
Sheffield has amassed 270mm in 2 days, heaviest in 110 yrs :eyepop: & 1st time all 5 major river systems in flood situation !

These fungi's are going to grow two foot high, may need a wide angle lens Trevor ;)

It's been brilliant Bob.
Aside from the disaster, photographically it fungiphile heaven.
All the damp and shaded spots are sprouting the most amazing display of fungi colour.
These eight are a sample of the 300+ photos i've taken this past few days. Still have many to process. And some absolutely gorgeous ones.
But. This all came with tragedy in hand, and that takes a bit of the shine off.

Beautifully strong colours in this lot Trevor, very well captured and presented - are you masking layers in photoshop, thses have a really good "pop- out' attitude about them, top class stuff any which how you doing them, excellent lighting in through-out - gives each their own tiny worldly environment & attitude in a six sense type of way.

Thanks David, yep a bit damp.

Bob: No layering. It's all about the lighting and depth of field. And then just tweaks on contrast and Light/Dark area brightness.
