Help a poor imager out

Ok guys, I have the full set of 1.25" Meade Series 2000 plossl eyepieces, a 2" 30mm 82deg FOV GSO eyepiece and a 2" GSO barlow but... I would like to buy one really good quality all purpose eyepiece (2" or 1.25") for my 12" F4.9 Skywatcher GOTO Dob. One that is good for general deep sky observing and doesn't introduce too many aberrations etc.

Question too hard?

Opinions? :)

Can't go past 20mm Type II Nagler.

16mm Nagler, I have the 12" F5 solid tube and this eyepiece lives in mine. FOV of just under a degree just a sweet mix for me.

Come to Robertson for a pie and a test.

Forget that TV stuff....go and get an ES 18mm 82º, and I guess you have a coma corrector?

Cheers Chris, Wayne and Matt, appreciate your feedback :thumbsup: and Wayne, be good to test drive some eyepieces actually so I may wait until SPSP and test out a few in the field actually on the scope...but I really don't want to wait that long :question:

I forgot to add that no I do not have a coma corrector so that was also part of the question, which eyepiece works well with a 12" F4.9 uncorrected Newt for deep sky :)

Personally, my favourite EP in my old 12" f5 was a TV 24mm Panoptic. lovely sharp field, good eye relief at 16mm, lightweight.
It is low power at 62x in yours and the exit pupil is 4.8mm.
It was the eyepiece I actually used 90% of the time in that scope.

The Nagler 16 type 5 really is a superb eyepiece - my favourite. I like my Panoptic 24, but for me the Nagler 16 hits the sweet spot, and is the crispest eyepiece in my collection.

What about the 13mm Nagler? will give me 113X and a true 44' FOV, seems about perfect for galaxies and Globular clusters...? Anyone have experience with what the aberrations might be like in a 12" F4.9 Newt?

A good coma corrector will really improve your useful field of view and allow you to take full advantage of those wide field EPs. I use the Baader MPCC for all my imaging and it works well with EPs as well. I also have the GSO coma corrector but it is heavier than the Baader. While I have TV and ES EPs for my visual work on the big dob, but the one that gets used the most is the GSO Superview 20mm - excellent optics and good field of view - and very cheap. The 20mm Superview is the EP I use when doing alignment for imaging on my newt.

My favourite combo in my 12" was the 24 Pan and the 13mm T6 Nagler. 113x was enough power for even poor seeing nights and the combo of low and moderate power was enough for most objects. Found pushing power beyond 113x was hit and miss at best, even a 10mm Ethos giving 150x was only useable on the very good nights.

Never bothered with a coma corrector, but that's just me!

Mike, 17.3mm Delos by a yard. The best eyepiece I have ever used, I like the 72 degree field as it is more relaxed then the 82 degree naglers.

Mike, I won't make a specific recommendation, but I'll suggest to look around the 10-13mm or the 24-28mm range. I find both are awesome in a fast dob, but for diffferent reasons. If it's one EP only, I'd lean towards the shorter bracket. Some good suggestions above for those focal lengths.
