Personally I just like cheap online access to these beasts set up to operate in darksky zones over the world.

Imagine you could image what you liked, anytime of the day, for say a couple of $ an hour :)

I like the idea of that too, problem is it's usually $150+/hour, not $2/hour :(

But then there's the gadget and whole ownership factor, which makes me wish I just owned the telescope outright :)

No need to go to the USA to buy a premium Professional Observatory Class telescope. Peter Mellander is a fellow AS of NSW member and owns Anssen Technologies at Arndell Park (Western Sydney) which produce high class observatory telescopes up to 20" and premium robotic mounts for a lot less money than the US people.

Anssen technologies previously specialised in high quality precision mounts but have now expanded their technology to include premium catadioptric telescopes on precision robotic mounts. Check out the Allira Series of scopes and mounts.

Very nice also, thanks for the link John. I can't find any prices on their website (understandably) but it'd be interesting to know how much the 20" costs to compare with the US alternatives. Anyone know? Not that I'm seriously going to buy one!

With these toys, it's a definite case of "If you have to ask, you can't afford it!"..... be nice though!

By my calculations the 20" setup with GST and a few extras would be around $95,000 which as you say is very good compared to the US companies ! Different optical system I note, and I wonder what other differences in accuracy etc.

Oh well, perhaps in 20 years when the house is paid off.... assuming we haven't reached peak oil and hence all living in mud brick houses again by then.
