I've been on the search lately for a new Astronomy chair as of late. My current chair is an adjustable height air piston stool I picked up some time ago from Officeworks for about $70-$80 at the time. I don't remember its exact cost. While this chair has served me faithfully. I feel I need an upgrade. After rebuilding my 12" the eyepiece height has risen by about 15 centimeters. I find myself using the stool towards the limit of its height. This has led to the problem that I have a hard time getting comfortable because my feet are no longer comfortably flat on the ground. I have to sit on the edge of the seat to make sure my feet are touching the ground properly to maintain stability. I also get nervous raising my feet on the stools "legs" as its on wheels. My front yard and back yard are not level and its actually quite plausible to roll away from my eyepiece (a little bit).

In my search I have been looking for a new chair that fills a criteria without that astronomical price. Below $150 including postage is the goal. The chair needs to be of sturdy construction and stable platform, adjustable height, and with a foot rest. In my search I've looked at all sorts of chairs. The usual astronomy chair, both metal and wooden construction. Ironing chairs and other stools as well.

Then I came across - by sheer dumb luck. Guitar stools. They seem to have everything I was looking for.

A prime example --> Here (http://www.swamp.net.au/guitar-stool.html)<--

Its not perfect. It only has 6 select-able chair heights . But since I do most of my observing within that range of height for the seat I think its OK. The seat doesn't go very low though. Might make looking at low objects tricky. Perhaps it can be modified? :shrug:
It comes with and adjustable back rest. That's pretty good! Don't have to worry about leaning back and falling off.

It's also quite cheap.

I think I'll get it and give a mini-review for you guys if your interested.

The only problem is, with the horizontal legs, is that if you're on a slope your movement is restricted before you reach a tipping point... I have one of these (http://www.firstlightoptics.com/misc/mey-observing-chair.html) but only use it at home on nights that I'm not imaging, as I can't support the laptop when using it. My cheesy little wooden chair I bring to star parties was like $40 from Ikea, go figure.

I really like the stool you use...comfy, and probably the perfect height for an SCT ;) :lol:

I feign the comfort. It was fine pre-rebuild. Its quite uncomfortable now.

Places like the airfield and star parties I HAVE to set the dob up on flat ground The ground is flat enough around it for a chair like this.

Hi AG Hybrid. I'd suggest you make your own observing chair. I recently made a 'Denver Chair' which is simple, effective, comfortable and easy to make (and exactly how I want it). Not sure if you've seen these posts. Alex
