New Stellarvue 60mm f/5.5 apo coming in August...

Looks like a nice little travelling companion and at that price sure to sell well Morton. As long as the QC is sufficient, it will be popular.

I'm trying to think of some justification to buy one!

I couldn't see anywhere mentioned that it's a triplet? Or because it's a Stellarvue, it's assumed?
Either way I'd love to have one!

MortonH

Actually, I think it's a doublet. My bad.

But supposedly will be colour-free for imaging.

Larryp

It's actually listed in their apochromatic triplet section, so I would assume it's a triplet. Love to get one!

MortonH

Yes, that's why I initially assumed it was a triplet. But I'm pretty sure their previous SV50 apo (doublet) was also listed in that section. Plus, all the other scopes in that section actually have "triplet" or "quad" in the name, so I think the SV60 is probably a doublet.

The site says it has FPL-53 glass in the lens, which would be sufficient for a colour-free doublet at 60mm aperture.

Hmmm, I thought 'quads' were doublets with a built-in field flattener, and 'quins' were triplets with the flattener?

MortonH
19-05-2014, 01:50 AM
I think that's usually the case, yes. Although Stellarvue did make a crazy 'quad' with a four-element objective as well!

Larryp

You are correct, it's an FPL53 doublet, Morton.

I can give you a reason not to buy one.

Your 66mm and 80mm fractors

MortonH

That might even be TWO reasons!

No one in Australia selling these?
Seems to be an import only

MortonH

You can order direct from Stellarvue or someone like OPT. I prefer direct from Stellarvue these days as OPT's shipping costs have increased.

Stellarvue told me today the scope is on schedule for release in mid-August.

Debating whether to sell my ZS66 and get one...

And LOSE aperture :confused2:

MortonH

I know. That's the dilemma. But there are plenty of happy FS60 and TV60 owners out there!

Stellarvue quoted me insane shipping prices for the M2 mount + extension column. $380+ for standard shipping. The shipping cost is more than the actual items!

I emailed them because i thought it was an error and was told it was the correct cost. Not sure what they're smoking over there.

OPTcorp works out cheaper

Stellarvue recently quoted $275 for shipping an 80mm scope to replace my 80ED. When I queried it they said they use FedEx after having big problems with other companies. Due to my problems with the old scope they gave me a huge discount on the shipping.

And to be fair to FedEx, the scope arrived in only two days!

But since OPT is quoting around $140 for shipping the M2 and column, I think someone at Stellarvue got that one very wrong - twice!

FYI Stellarvue direct now has USPS as a shipping option.

The shipping cost for the mount i was after has dropped from $380 to $140.

Still, by the time you factor in their field flattener at $285, the WO Star 71 is probably the better imaging scope, both FPL-53 but is faster to boot :P (for an extra US$100)

MortonH

Yes, they just introduced the new options last week.

It never occurred to me to compare the boot times of refractors... :P

Doesn't fit in your coat pocket though ;)

Depends how big your pockets are :P

Unless my internet detective skills are getting rusty, I'm not seeing their specs...besides focal length and weight (3lbs). The WO is heavier but will have a flat field...and gulps 40% more light ;)

Jus sayin!

Everybody always talks about the cool-down times of Newts and Casses, but at least they're instant-on :)

;)One of these ? , FPL53 triplet , great optics and build ,,,:D and it fits in your coat pocket .

Dunno what coats you guys wear, but where I'm from we call the people that wear them "flashers" ;)

I've got my eye on the SVR102T-25SV (http://www.stellarvue.com/stellarvue-svr102t-25sv-top-rated-4-apo-triplet-refractor/). I have almost 100% certainty it will be my next scope.

MortonH

They have a special on this scope just now. Free 2" diagonal and reduced shipping (free shipping in US, reduced overseas).

I will be extremely jealous if you buy one!

Steffen

That's a lot of money for a finder scope... :P;)

Cheers
Steffen.

Adrian, for a bit less money...

I'm going to use it for Astrophotography and visual. The focuser unscrews so it will be airtravel carry on luggage size. I'll take it with me to Hawaii in a couple years.

I'm not buying it now even if it is on special at the moment. Probably wont get it for a nearly a year if I'm honest. I want that lightweight carbon fiber too. Its sooo pretty.

MortonH

Jeez. Now I'm even more jealous!!!

Pulled the trigger on the M2, now i just need a portable SV scope to match it.

SV60 or 80 for xmas :)

Oh how I hate to see a grown man cry

MortonH

Nice one. In case you're not aware, the M2 can take an encoder kit from JMI, should that be of interest.

Apparently the first run of the SV60 apo will be completed in around 30 days. Looking forward to some reports, even though I bought the SV66ED instead.

MortonH

The scope will begin shipping next week. It's been re-named the SV60EDS.

MortonH

Even now this will cost close to A$900 delivered. Glad I picked up the SV66ED when I did.
