The tempest has amazingly lifted after almost three weeks of rainy and or cloudy nights in Sydney - now the moon is large and I am too tired

You probably will not see them here unless you build one.

In recent discussions with Ales at iStar Optical (I am building a 127mm f12, 1500mm fl, Anastigmatic R30, TCR tube frame clone), he advised that they can't justify an Australian distributor their scopes because they would cost too much to get them to us, and be up against ED APO price points. Thus, he encourages us to build our own using his objectives, which is what I am doing, and what MattT recently did, and some others.

At F5.9 those Istar lenses will need to be good with a CA ratio of 0.73. That's like a 6 inch F4.4. In an achro? Mmm.

:shrug:Read the review , its an Istar not a garden variety objective , for its purpose its awesome .

If interested here in a venus shot taken at 2000mm using my TV 2x powermate and sony A200 DSLR , zero work just sized , so you can you make a judgement on what the CA ratio ? is supposed to be in my Istar 127mm f8 achromat ( 1000mm ) on the CA ratio tables you used here , look at this photo ? please I am interested .

The proof is in the viewing , sorry to say .

Brian.

If memory serves me correctly Istar have been making for some time previously another 8" achro which I believe is F9. Although I am not aware of any large reviews I have seen a few short 1-2 paragraph reviews on it which were all very favourable. I also believe there is a u-tube clip of it in action as well. The only immediately apparent downside being the general size of the OTA being a fraction smaller than the average Howitzer:lol:

I see no noticeable CA Brian, if that is what you are asking.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bagging Istar. They fill a gap between achro and APO. The 8" F5.9 I'm sure would be a deep sky and comet killer, something it was designed for. I'm just mentioning it may disappoint some for planetary viewing. Everyone has different CA tolerances and the CA of an 8" at F5.9 may be a bit too much for some.

Brian, your Istar would have considerably better CA than the 8 inch due to aperture and focal ratio. Other factors being equal, it's focal ratio divided by aperture in inches. The higher the resulting figure the better the CA.

Quite right Kevin .... the 8" inch Istar is primarily a Deep Sky ' Wide Field ' Instrument..... not a Planet Killer.
I'd love to have a look thru' one .... would most likely have me wanting one if I could .... Wide Field views are my ' thing ' and of course DSO's
My NA140 does that for me using ' low power ' eyepieces.

Now that's big! :eyepop: If that's a 20" F 12.2 then the "little" finder scope on the side is probably that Istar 8".

I've been looking at this bad boy for a long time. I was thinking of getting it as a 30th birthday present to myself. But, that's 11 months away though. Who knows what might be brought to the market by then that will peak my interest.

Seriously?? That's a seven metre long scope, where would you keep it? Must be sarcasm...

Cheers

You would need a boat trailer to move it around, but it would draw a serious crowd at IISAC. Imagine the field tripod required, where is that structural engneer that had worked on the Big Dish?
