The VicSouth Desert Spring Star Party (http://vicsouth.info/vicsouth.htm) is an annual weekend of astronomy, held at the Little Desert Nature Lodge about 16km south of the town of Nhill in western Victoria (Australia).
VicSouth is jointly hosted by the Astronomical Society of Victoria and the Astronomical Society of South Australia, and offers a great weekend of social and astronomical activity as well as some nice observing targets.

* Amazing View of Saturn Like Never Before

This incredible image of Saturn was pieced together and processed by amateur Gordan Ugarkovic.
"On Oct. 10, 2013, Cassini took 36 shots of Saturn, a dozen each using red, green, and blue filters which approximate true color. Ugarkovic grabbed the raw files, processed them, and assembled them into this mosaic.
The detail is incredible. Cassini was high above Saturn to the north, looking “down” on the ringed world when it took these images. You can see the bizarre hexagonal north polar vortex, the six-sided jet stream flowing around Saturn. The subtle but beautiful bands mark the cloud tops of Saturn’s atmosphere"

I think it's so cool that a space-craft can be flying over Saturn, 1.6 billion km's away, take some pics, and then within days NASA makes them freely available for anyone to grab and process if they wish. Stunning view.
* Huge Chunk of Meteorite found in Russian Lake
A half-ton chunk of the Chelyabinsk asteroid has been dredged up from Lake Chebarkul.
There's a nice story about it on Slate by Phil Plait (http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/10/17/chelyabinsk_impact_huge_chunk_of_as teroid_dredged_up_from_lake.html), which includes a video of them dragging the meteorite out of the lake and trying to weigh it - when a piece breaks off!
When I watched the video, I was taken back by the view of the lake - I still remember the massive hole in the frozen lake found shortly after the meteorite impact. Now it's of course just water, not frozen. It would've been quite an effort finding and pulling it out!
