Anyone else already getting excited about this one? :D I think down here in Moe, Gippsland we'll get just over 50% coverage.

I'm in Moe, which is just down the road from Traralgon. Estimated view should be as per the link. I'd be happy with this!

Many thanks for a hugely useful & (to me) hitherto unrecognised astro resource: I thought they only did Time & Date stuff, but I'm clearly wrong!

See Xavier's page (http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/xSE_GoogleMapFull.php?Ecl=+20140429&Acc=2&Umb=1&Lmt=1&Mag=1&Max=1). You need to be in Antarctica to get more than a partial.

I will make the trip to Melbourne for some partial shots!

what will Wodonga see??

Anywhere in Vic should be pretty good, but I'm even pleased with NSW's prospects, weather permitting. A sunset partial is as good as partials get, aesthetically . It doesn't really matter whether it's 30 or 50% at time of sunset.

Yep! -am looking forward to catching the partially eclipsed Sun set over Port Phillip Bay here.
A nice way to finish off an astronomically busy April! :)

Any shot of a partial at sunset is worthwhile,
Picked my observing spot already

Hi all, can anyone advise on some possible spots in sydney which has a largely unobstructed view to the west? I know it's hard because of a the buildings. Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Mike

Can you be a bit more specific than "Sydney"? CBD? Eastern suburbs? North side? North-west? ...

Argh sorry I should have been specific. Eastern suburbs and inner west would be the best for me.. I am going to meet a couple of friends in Newtown and we may go to sydney park, but if there are better locations I'm happy to go.

Might be worth keeping an eye on when the back edge of the front clears the western horizon of Melbourne. Probably only a very small chance of catching some eclipse (better from W suburbs, Geelong), but not impossible. More likely it'll clear just after sunset...

Been pretty cloudy in Perth but we got glimpses - mine came at the right time for maximum eclipse!

Only a bite out of the sun here in Mackay, but the weather behaved......mostly. The first two pics taken with an 8" f6 newt and badder filter, the second two, no filter 5" f5 refractor and the last one 135mm no filter on tripod.

Melbourne's weather was terrible -but it was worth the wait 'til sunset. The cloud low down on the horizon cleared just enough at sunset to get a glimpse of the partially covered sun. A bit blurry, but not bad considering it was taken while still raining! Just how many people can say they've viewed an eclipse in the rain? :) Did anyone else see it from Melbourne? This photo taken from Parkdale foreshore.

So no intrepid adventurers made it to Antarctica, then? I haven't seen any reports from there yet, thought some extremists might have made the effort.

Hi Jacquie,

No reports from Antarctica have come past this reporter :-)

It was cloudy from Sydney out to Mudgee. Bit of a downer. The University of Western Sydney put on a (free) open evening for members of the public who wished to view the eclipse, and WSAAG members with solar capability attended to help out … but it was not a good look. The beginning was captured through a hole in the cloud … but after 4:45pm there was no show.

Oh well. There's always the 2002 KX14 TNO occultation on the 12th (Aussie time). Mag 14.1 star at a reasonable 47 degrees altitude in the west, no moon ...

http://devel2.linea.gov.br/~braga.ribas/campaigns/2014-05-11-18.613_NIMA_2002KX14.jpg

It's mentioned on Occult Watcher as well.

Note the IOTA feed is done with the standard UCAC4 (?) catalogue, while Felipe's prediction has likely had some astrometric magic sauce added from an observing run on a fairly big scope more recently. This may explain the considerable difference in paths described. (IOTA's being north of Borneo, and Felipe's being south of Alice Springs.

Tony Barry

Hi Jacqui,

Nobody did. There was a practical barrier. There are no research stations in the path and no transport to/from Antarctica at this time of year.

It would have necessitated wintering over at the French-Italian Concordia research station. Then observers would have to undertake a long dangerous overland trek (on foot) to get to the path & back to the station. Word from the station is that nobody is there for the eclipse and the official staff planned to observe a deep partial from the station.

cheers

Joe Cali

Hmm, yes. Might be a bit faint for me but I'll give it a go.

To Joe: Thanks for the info, good to know the exact circumstances there.
