Who else didn't know they would have to pay additional delivery fees for an EQ8?

Are you sure?
The data sheet weights on the bintel site adds up to about 69kg. That is a lot of packing.:P

I believe that is the problem Terry, bad info in the first place.
The couriers won't carry it.

ok i see i chipped the nail polish:rolleyes:

if the retailer formulates a final price, and you pay in full for an agreed content including delivery and any extras then that is a deal. if the retailer wildly gives a quote, and said it includes delivery then hits you up for extras for delivery - provided you have paid in full then as far as i am concerned they don't get the extra because of the contract they agreed with the purchaser. but if you only paid a deposit then the price changes because of unforeseen things then its up to the purchaser if they wish to continue with the deal.

i learnt my lesson the hard way early in the journey

What's the gossip Robin? I was hoping to pick mine up from a certain local dealer and don't expect further charges. PM me if you wish to be discrete!

Did you get yours from Ron Johnathon? I had an order in there last year and it fell through and when I tried again I got lots of interference and ambiguity so ordered elsewhere.

If your doing a pickup your right I guess, I got hit $100 delivery from Claude in SA even though My emails say 'all included'. I heard someone in WA is looking at $500 for delivery.

It appears to have something to do with the weight, the carriers want them on a pallet which cost more. If the total weight is 127Kgs then no wonder. As it's always been, there is no info on this mount.

If it doesn't track well it's going to make a great anchor ;)

Normally if something's on a pallet there's a set price. Weight/what's on the bloody pallet has zero to do with it within reason.

I think thats the problem John, they had no idea It would have to be on a pallet. As Terry already said, quoted weight was 69 Kg.

$100 extra for it to be safely on a pallet rather than being bounced around on a handtrolley from pillar to post sounds like the plan to me!

Agree with Matt - wouldn't you rather pay extra and be reasonably confident of it arriving safely rather than subjected to the rigours of "normal" delivery?

I am waiting till all the hype dies down and true reports are out after continual use before putting my buck on the line with this one. Or pick up one of the Losmandy's going cheap in the mean time :)

That's good news that they are on the way ... although i haven't heard anything as yet. I really hope its in store before close of business tomorrow so i can collect.

Its unfortunate that others have to pay for extra delivery but I am not sure you can blame the stores too much, they have been fairly in the dark about the product too.

Fingers crossed it does most of the things it promises to be

Cheers

A quote from the Bintel site about the mount.
"Ideal grab-n-go EQ mount for field set up so I don't have to take the Losmandy Titan out of my observatory" - D.H. Newcastle.

At over 100kg I want to know who the muscleman is that will "grab and go" with these mounts. :eyepop:

Mike's got your counterweights (http://www.pbase.com/strongmanmike2002/image/68940581) David. He'll be back for the tripod and equatorial head momentarily... :D

I did, and I hope he has a batch coming soon.

I've been missing using an encoder based mount since moving my main research work from the dob which tracks and points better than the LX200! I can't believe that the other high end manufacturers are charging three grand for encoders as an add on- I bet they are quaking in their boots...

Delivered on its own pallet? That's interesting. Even my ME was fine delivered in a sturdy cardboard box.

It goes on volumetric weight rather than actual weight. Something that only weights 69kg may actually take up a lot of room on a truck, as shown with the eq8 being delivered in a number of large boxes on a pallet, thus showing a volumetric weights of 127kg, as some have suggested here, and hence the higher freight cost. I doubt the pallet has anything to do with it, as it is not usually used in that calculation.

From the DHL site http://www.dhl.com.au/en/tools/volumetric_weight_express.html : "The volumetric weight of a shipment is a calculation that reflects the density of a package. A less dense item generally occupies more volume of space, in comparison to its actual weight. The volumetric or dimensional weight is calculated and compared with the actual weight of the shipment to ascertain which is greater; the higher weight is used to calculate the shipment cost."

I have had some very light, but rather bulky items shipped to me and it has also been calculated on its volumetric weight, not its actual weight, as the volumetric weight is higher. So, you cannot necessarily go by weights shown on data sheets, as these do not take into account the volume of the boxed items, which can be quite bulky with packing material, as we see with most astronomical equipment, as it is usually well packed and protected.

Cheers Peter

I'm impressed. That's thoughtful shipping. I can't wait to hear how you guys/gals like the mount.

No one took into consideration the 25kg equipment case in which the head ships. :D
We were wary about quoting shipping until we saw the cartons.

So has bintel hit customers up additional funds for delivery?

Apocrisiary
07-06-2013, 07:00 PM
The prices on our website don't include shipping charges. We are still looking for a freight company that offers free shipping.
The cost of getting the mount up to Brisbane is $95. The cost of getting one to Perth is $295.
If you want to come in and pick one up its free.

Andrews appear to have found one :scared3:

Were shipping costs disclosed when people ordered?
I got hit up expectantly.

Well my locally sourced mount went elsewhere despite being 'guaranteed' since Feb.

Top marks to Bintel for coming to the rescue.
Mine arrives early next week, and the shipping cost is miniscule compared to the misery of missing out.
