Anyone heard anything about the next edition?
By my reckoning, the May/June edition should be out soon (ie, before July).:P

13-06-2006, 08:29 PM
well, just wait then eh, I paid my 3/6year subscription so I have plenty of time to wait!;) :D
13-06-2006, 08:40 PM
Well I got my July/August edition in the post today. I have yet to read it but there is a free CD about the Gemini Obs. attached to it.
13-06-2006, 09:02 PM
got it today as well. This is the last monthly edition, as we all know its going bi monthly hereafter
careful removing the Gemini CD , my cover ripped
13-06-2006, 09:13 PM
Which did you get? Sky and Space or Aussie Sky and Telescope?
13-06-2006, 09:49 PM
you guys are nuts, its the S&S that is missing;)
Their web site still features the March/April edition!
13-06-2006, 10:53 PM
It will be worth the wait.
13-06-2006, 11:00 PM
JJJ, you are avery optamistic person:lol:
13-06-2006, 11:57 PM
Well I got the AST today and although the mag looks good with some nice articles the CD makes a good drink coaster, unlike the Hubble DVD they put out on the cover a few months back this one's not really worth the effort, BTW, just before you get excited about this disk, it is for computers, not DVD's. S&S I dont subscribe to so mine is definately missing.
14-06-2006, 09:15 AM
Hello! S&S and AS&T are two different mags! For S&S to be late is normal.
14-06-2006, 03:32 PM
ooops!
Buy the way, the disc that came with Sky and Telescope, is not a happy little disc at all.....i just turffed it out, and deleted the whole program, it dosn't like doing what it's asked, so it decides to freeze the computer.
Turned the machine off at the button, re started, got rid of the program, and and the disc......all is well again.

Did anybody read the panel at the bottom of page 8? it says that the responce to the mag going bimonthly was exceptional!, they obviously did not read the forum on iceinspace which went for quite some time, and in my opinion was very negative towards this happening, as I said in one of my posts people subcribed for eleven issues A YEAR, not eleven issues for TWO YEARS.
There are some nice articles but very little observational astronomy, it is a good forum for getting iceinspace members photo's published, but as a true astronomy magazine it leaves a lot to be desired.
This will be my last issue purchased
18-06-2006, 01:41 AM
I am only 2 issues into my 11 issue subscription .... and although the aforementioned page 8 panel does state clearly they will refund in full unused portions of subscriptions to anyone (a fair policy in my opinion) I will stick to my subscription.
This does not mean I'm happy to have been forced to go bi-monthly - it just means they have twice as long in real time as before to convince me to renew my subscription when it runs out. I will be weighing this up even more carefully now.
18-06-2006, 02:57 AM
l agree with Ron, some reasonable articles but it is moving away from observational astronomy as it relates to the amateur astronomer.
18-06-2006, 04:04 PM
Simple lesson on the English Language
S&S = sky and space
S&T = sky and telescope
are the two the same
Please please keep to the original topic of the thread, as I cant handle being confused too much:D :P
18-06-2006, 04:17 PM
HOughy, I think this thread has combined the two mags in the discussion, go to post #4 for the start of the confusion:rofl:
18-06-2006, 04:24 PM
right then Volans did the damage, lets stone him...........
I must say I agree with you Ron.
To me, it reads like the publisher/powers-that-be talking the whole change up and trying to "sell" the deal up.
I for one, as a subscriber, am not happy.
Will the bi-monthly version be bigger (more pages)? I doubt it.
Will it be any more timely or stronger in other ways than it's previous monthly version? We'll have to wait and see but my feeling is, again, no.
This simply smacks of some kind of cutback or cost-cutting measure that we're being told is good for us.
These are all my subjective opinions, by the way.

Aussie sky and telescope
My main complaint would be the lack of observational astronomy and me thinks they spend too much time on space history, I didn't buy this months issue.
Sky and space
My main complaint is it is never on time :mad2:
The solution. Merge, become monthly and rename the new mag australian telescope and space :P
Hey Houghy.. This ones for you
as&t=a&t x aas&t - ts&a all going bi-monthly but only every 3 months, for 2 months.Subscriptions will be 3 times the price for 1 third of the time But only if you read them in the usa asap. Pretty clear really
Ill get in trouble for this for sure

For your information, I have subscribed to AS&T, S&S, A, and S&T and have been known to get AN, and CA, so everything is covered. Failing that could use the www:P
19-06-2006, 04:40 PM
Same place everyone elses is. DOn't ask S&S for an explaination you will get a 1000 page essay on why its late. just be happy in the service and if your boots feel warm and you have a smile on your face be happy:) :D tomorrow will alway come:thumbsup:
19-06-2006, 04:46 PM
But I haven't received either mag (AS&T or S&S):confuse2: :tasdevil:  :mad2:

Has anyone got their S&S yet ?
26-06-2006, 07:42 PM
No, not worried though, it will turn up one day:thumbsup: ;) but not holding my breath:D
28-06-2006, 02:46 AM
I agree the result is cost cutting. The market in Australia will struggle to support one monthly mag... even bi-monthly will be tight, let alone with 2 mags. This is why parent S&T is no longer sold at newsagents... to assist the viability of the new mag. (Also why S&S lead a concerted campaign to eliminate Southern Sky) John NAlly will put a spin on it, but economics lies at the roots.
On another note, S&S ALWAYS had a problem being on time, even when John was editor. Again the roots are economics, no matter how many times the (a) printers/offices burnt down, (b) problems with the printer, (c) moved premises, (d) dog ate the proofs, (e) Mars on a cusp with Saturn in Leo. Australia is a small market and Australian mags will suffer.
28-06-2006, 02:56 AM
Too much bad blood between Lyle Rumble and John Nally for that to happen. The content is determined by the licence from S&T... a certain amount has to be bought from the US and sources of quality aussie material is scarce.
A solution for any short comings is to write articles for publication. You might get some pocket money and there will be more local content. Another thing will be support... if no-one buys the mag, they don't have enough money to print.
I'm not saying you have to buy this mag or that, but if we don't support what we've got, we won't have it for long.
28-06-2006, 08:35 PM
I can quite easily live with out S+S and AS+T its no hassle. It is upto those two magazines to get their act together. Maybe the Editors of the two mag's should have their heads banged together, we don't care about politics or personalities, we just want a locally produced and viable local mag. Otherwise I am going back to Astronomy :D
28-06-2006, 08:53 PM
I saw S&S in the newsagents, I am still waiting for my Subscribers copy, normally you would think you get that before it hits the shelves. It has never been that way!
29-06-2006, 06:49 AM
Yep ... got the Email, letting us know its coming !
29-06-2006, 04:52 PM
Just returned from shopping where I saw Sky and Space in the newsagents. Didn't buy it, Im sorta over Astronomy mags ;)
29-06-2006, 06:25 PM
Just picked up the July/August Sky & Space at the newsagent today.
04-07-2006, 08:26 AM
Found mine in the mailbox yesterday...
Haven't had a chance to read through it yet but I am sure that there are good things inside!
04-07-2006, 09:47 AM
OK I still havent recieved mine yet?
06-07-2006, 01:00 AM
The last time this topic was posted by me, it caused a big stir.
I am staying right out of it.
I just buy from newsagents now.
06-07-2006, 07:28 AM
Rang them and had to get them to resend another issue. They need to get their distribution sorted out very quickly, this is the third time this had happened in 3 years.
06-07-2006, 08:05 AM
Well, after reading it cover to cover in the newsagent for the last 11 days, my S&S finally turned up in the letter box yesterday afternoon. Great.
It's a very nice issue.
I like how they've used users images throughout the mag.
