Music device advice needed.

Hello.

Hoping some tecky people might be able to help me.I had a small USB type device 'Sandisk sansa' it has written on it,It held 1 GB of music and I could toggel through a small display screen,I had a small set of ear plugs and all worked-until it jamed in car door-the data is still on it-so can get all songs off via laptop.

I have no idea where I got this USB device from,or what its called,I need to buy a new one,and some reasonable speakers,I'd like to have some music when camping etc.So if anyone could advise on a similar device and speakers,and where I can purchase,and approx how much-would be much appreciated-I am not up with all this high tec stuff,and do not go to any electronic shops-there are none in the bush.Thanks for any help.

Chris....Yes ..That'll work ...it appears the Speakers are ' powered ' so you should get decent Audio Volume.

Thank you-I did try and find 'powered' ones,but just was not sure if the cables and connection points would connect up.If anyone has a link or to suggestion to larger speakers that might be worth a look.

Also,the specs in the device in above link,say it can be a recording device,what sort small recording speaker could be used?

Hi Chris,

Why not buy a used iPod nano? The 5th generation ones are pretty cheap on eBay and are usually 8Gb. My two kids have these and they still use them, even though they both have iPhones as well now. If they can stand up to teenagers, they may even stand up to the car door every now and then!

Chris, it has an inbuilt microphone so you can just talk at it and record your observations etc.

There is a new type of 'speaker' out that is exceptionally portable. It's basically a cylinder about (according to my faulty memory) 50mm x 35mm that vibrates. You place it on a hard object and the cylinder transmits the vibrations (sound) to the object which then acts as the speaker. I know it sounds weird and unlikely to work but apparently it does and sounds reasonably good. A mate, who used to work as a sound engeneer and so knows about sound quality, heard on sitting on a styrofoam crate and was impressed, given what it was. I heard a demo on a cardboard box and thought it wasn't too bad but that was spoken voice, not music.

I've forgotten the name at the moment but they have them in the bookshop at work, so I could check up on Monday. You might then find some reviews and decide whether it is for you.

Thanks David,that certainly is interesting-never heard of anything like that,maybe if at camp-it could be placed on car bonnet.I'd like to find out more,and see what price they are in the bookshop near your work.

It has a SD slot in side of it,can images be reviewed on this item,that have been taken with a video recorder/camera?it would be kinda handy if it did,or is it such that its just for extra music space?

I heard one of those portable speakers you dock your smartphone to the other night and it wasn't too bad at all. Lacked bottom end of course but the sound was nice and clean. Thinking about it I'd say the BoomBox is for either novelty value or where space is seriously limited (eg backpacking). I'd think for car-based camping a 'proper' portable system is a better bet. One possible idea (totally unproven of course) is that, if the portable speakers lack bass you also have a boombox. You mount the boombox on a large object (eg car roof), split the signal and let the speakers deliver the clean top end while the boombox adds a bit of bass to 'flesh out' the sound.
