Hi everyone,

Hopefully some of you have come across the Australian Gemini Astronomy Contest already. If not, here are some details!

In 2013, we are giving amateur astronomers in Australia the opportunity to pick a target to be observed with one of the world's largest optical telescopes, the 8-metre Gemini South telescope in the Andes Mountains of Chile.
How? By selecting an object in the Southern sky and providing an aesthetic and scientific justification for your choice.

One hour is available to observe your object. The field of view of the camera is 5.5 arcminutes square, but we can certainly dither to cover larger fields. Be imaginative, be creative!

More details can be found on the contest website (http://ausgo.aao.gov.au/contest/amateurcontest.html).

We also provide ongoing updates at the Australian Astronomical Observatory Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/AustralianAstronomicalObservatory). Please Like us :)

That's right - we got a nice image of three spirals last year.

There is also a student competition, but this year we are running a competition specifically for amateur astronomers. :)
