First observation report for a while as I've been focusing on recording Magellanic Cloud tours. Interesting to look at a different bit of sky for a change! Interesting also to start having some decent transparency! Thanks for reading.
Observations 8/2/2013
Telescope 400mm f4.9 tri-dob reflector
Eyepieces 28mm UWAN, 17,13,9 mm Naglers, Paracorr
Navigation: Uranometria, Night Sky Observer’s Guide
Seeing good, transparency good
2230
Collinder 74 Open cluster & Barnard 36 dark nebula in Orion
135x Irregular 8’ dia. OC with 6 brighter stars and myriad faint ones forming a well delineated haze which stands out clearly against background including dark nebula Barnard 36, a 3.5degx 30’ N-S star poor area of sky
NGC 2022 PN in Orion
250X 30” smoky round soft-edged disc, with averted vision some brighter patches appear within and there may be a dark central punctum. No central star. Seems slightly softer and fainter on the western side. Brightens with both UHC and OIII filters, but no further structure seen.
NGC 2169 Open cluster in Orion
135x 8’x4’ cluster of 20 or so stars, some very bright. As the NSOG says, looks very clearly like the number 37
NGC 2194 Open cluster in Orion
135x 8’x5’ cluster of many mostly faint stars. Looks a bit like a cross-section of a steel beam.
NGC 2207 & IC 2163 Interacting galaxies in Canis Major
175x Overall 4’x2’ elongated E-W haze with 2 sections. To the west is NGC 2207 with a distinct core elongated ENE-WSW. IC 2163 is a 1’ brightening at the eastern side of the glow.
NGC 2362 Tau Canis Major Cluster
Magnificent!
PK205+14.1 Abell 21 “Medusa” PN in Gemini
90x Faint 10’ milky round glow to S of a triangular asterism. Brightens a bit with OIII filter
Comet Lemmon in Octans
90x . 7’ diameter coma with very bright core and 1 deg long 7’ wide tail to the north.
