Alright, get ready for a bumpy ride at the end of the year - apparently the next Pope will be the last and it will happen while Comet ISON is visible!

I agree with Jarrod. The evidence is pretty clear and compelling. These "End of the World" prophecies have always come true in the past.

Within minutes of the announcement CNN was full of comments referring to the "St Malachy prophecies" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes) - possibly written by Nostradamus. If you twist hard enough you can read anything into them.

OMG....I was attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes last night, and there was a comet in the sky that I was imaging.
Does that mean that Comet Lemmon is a "Plague" comet?
Someone in the 15th century predicted plagues at the end of time so it must be true.
It's amazing times we live in.

... Fairfax Media photographer Nick Moir said the image looked genuine.
"It's probably not that rare for St Peter's to get hit," he said.
"The bolt is hitting a lightning rod to the side of the cross, it seems."
Although Moir said there was no way to verify when the photograph was taken.

This will be number 7 of the earth ending prophecies that I have survived.
Oops! That is After I survive through this one.

How many is the record? Does anyone know?

The Quatrain says "The great one of Rome will die" but the article says the Pope will "flee" looks like to me the Pope didn't want any part of the Prophecy and decided to jump ship, thus saving the him and the world again ;)

Hi Brent, Ric, Troy and others mentioning doomsday jibba jabba.

Its very likely that there will be all kinds of rubbish arising from this event. I sometimes view short bits of the Foxtel presentation, Psychic TV. I wont say any more about that. Other than: I expect the program to take full advantage of the Comet event.

I found the following:

GEORGE said: THE TRUE STORY OF COMET ISON COMING NOVEMBER 2013:
CALLED BY ONE ASTRONOMER A “ONCE IN A CIVILIZATION” COMET, IT MAY ACTUALLY BE A ONCE IN 333 YEARS COMET; IT, THE TWIN IN ORBIT TO THE GREAT COMET OF 1680 WHICH SO TERRIFIED EUROPEANS AND NEW ENGLANDERS THAT DAYS OF FASTING AND ATONEMENT WERE ORDERED IN NEW YORK CITY AND GERMANY!
TRACING THE REVOLUTIONS BACK ANOTHER 333 YEARS TO 1347 IT IS CALLED COMET NEGRA AND BLAMED FOR THE BLACK PLAGUE THAT RAVISHED EUROPE. IN 1014 IT WAS REFERRED TO AS A ‘TERRIBLE COMET WITH A FIERY TAIL’ BY NAZI-HUNTER ELLE WEIZEL IN HIS NOVEL RASHI. ALONG THIS TIME LINE IT SHOULD HAVE APPEARED IN 15 AD THE YEAR AFTER THE DEATH OF AUGUSTUS CAESAR. BUT COULD IT HAVE APPEARED IN 5 BC INSTEAD?

Benny will be safe. No longer the Pope. Its his successor that may be in trouble. Maybe they will find it difficult to find a new Pope.

A couple of the previous popes were invited to resign. They didn't. They died very soon after.

Slow ... News ... Day. ;)

Anyway, the Popes already left Rome during the Schisms (early 1300s to early 1400s).

-----------

Just in case you thought papal history went straightforwardly, something like: JC > early church > conversion of Rome > Constantinople > Holy Roman Empire > Popes in Rome > Present Day ... then read this (as a teaser to a long and involved history of empires and religion):

The Bishops of Rome, etc. (http://www.friesian.com/popes.htm)

I saw on the internet that if Father Dougal Maguire get 10,000 "likes', the Vatican are going to appoint him Pope.

Father Dougal: I've never met a celebrity before.
Father Ted: You met the Pope.
Father Dougal: Did I?
Father Ted: Yes, do you not remember that time we were in Rome?
Father Dougal: That was the Pope? That old fella living in the art gallery?
Father Ted: The Vatican, Dougal! The Vatican!
Father Dougal: Still, he's not a celebrity in the true sense of the word.
Father Ted: He's God's representative on Earth, Dougal!
Father Dougal: You'd think he'd be taller.
Father Ted : You mean like a giant?

Not even close to 333 years. JPL gives C/2012 S1 (ISON) an orbital period of 1.16E+95 days. That's 3.17E+92 years. The universe is only 13.7E+9 years old - about 2E+82 times less. (I was tempted to write out the zeroes.)
Given that the eccentricity is given as slightly more than 1 (ie never returns), even that should be an underestimate.

Always good reading. I am on the mailing list and get a copy every month. However I am hopeless at Nervo Shatterini's quiz. Without cheating I average about two right answers per issue.

Personally, I think the Pope was having too many all nighters at this place (http://www.vaticanstate.va/EN/Other_Institutions/The_Vatican_Observatory.htm) and it just got to him!!! :D

PS It's funny how words can bring back memories - a phrase above jogged my brain about seeing the Allniters at the old Mooloolaba Hotel back in '86... great band... good times... weird connection!
