Bought an Orion Rich Field short tube guidescope whilst I was at Sirius Optics today. The demo example looked good, so I bought one ($180).
Got it home and unwrapped. OMG!
Orion QC checkers missed this one! OK, it's a guidescope and aesthetcs aren't vital, but...
1. black overspray at the back of the tube (where the focuser body attaches) on the white tube. Quite a LOT!
2. Back overspray/run on the bottom edge of the dewshield.
3. Black run on the exposed edge of the dewshield, and they sat it down on a surface, and it congealed into a pool of hardened paint! About 2mm thick, with a sharp edge.
4. Silver Orion data decal lifting
5. Sun warning deal placed at an oblique angle!
Wow. I set to work with some metho which removed the black overspray, chipped off the sag with a scalple and rubbed that down too, removed both decals entirely and cleaned glue residue with alcohol.
Then I had to regrease the rack and pinion - the grease was like araldite!
For $180 it's OK, but really quite poor QC qith this one Works fine, which is the important thing, but we all like our rigs to look presentable too.
