I am related to Admiral ' Bill ' Halsey ...Admiral of The Fleet ... United States Navy ... in WWII.

Whether that's a good thing or not ...I really don't know ... The 'Japs' might not think so .. :D

Allegedly, my family line has been traced back to an illegitimate offspring of Charles II. Does that count?

I did some ads as a 21-23 year old in the mid 90s

I played football for the Sydney Swans, so I was famous once

My Grand Mother did a family tree 10 years ago and she got back to the cousin of Robert the Bruce of Scotland.

I once watched the Hunt for Red October with The Right Honorable Robert Hawke PM at the Sheraton in Brisbane. I had morning tea with the Governor General and ALMOST went windsurfing with Charles, Prince of Wales.

I say ALMOST because he cancelled at the last minute as Diana was not feeling well........ que sera sera

Went to Yarralumla to meet the GG - back in the late 60s.

I know several of Russell Crowe's neighbours at the the Wharf. He does drop in on them from time to time but never has while we were there. His driver did get close to running us over one day in the car park while taking them home.

I was to be his bodyguard, I got the job as I was the only one in the protection detail who could windsurf .......... alas it was not to be, I did get to meet him later but would have preferred the windsurfing.

I did get to meet 5 Governors General, 4 Prime Ministers, George Bush Snr and the President of Finland among others. But nobody really famous !!!

When did you live at the Wharf? I was there from 2001-06. I used to see Russ from a distance, especially when he shot off in his Porsche Cayenne, but never met the guy.

Matt,

if it's not a rude question, what job do you do that takes you so close to so many big names?

Cheers

Paul I'm retired now but spent 21 years in the Federal Police and a bit of time in the Army before that.

I would have swapped all those names for the chance to have a beer or 2 with Billy Connelly, would have been more memorable for sure!

Wow JJJ, bringing back the memories. Even as a young 'un I struggled with that show. The lady who was hosting always seemed to be a bit patronizing to me. What was she like in real life?

06-12-2012, 01:19 PM
Ha ha, be blowed if I can remember what she was like. This was nearly 45 years ago. LOL
I was only there for the glass of milk and biscuit and to sing the Astronomy song. :)

"Bend and stretch
Reach for the stars
There goes Jupiter
Here goes Mars
Bend and stretch
Reach for the stars
Stand on tippy toes
Oh so high".....

actually the horse song had a big impact on me too

"Ohhhh come with us and gallup
And gallup and gallup " ad nauseum.

I don't know whether to be happy or sad that I remember all the lyrics to these songs.

Gee all you people dropping names.
I would love to tell you about all the people I met and things I did but I had to sign the official secrets act to get my level six clearance.

Of course
You should have seen the VIP treatment we got in our car going through Edinburgh. Police stopping all traffic to let me through.

There were 5 afternoon tea marquees. I had strawberries and cream in each.
Didn't feel too well on the way home though!

I have another one, the other way around having people wanting to meet me!

It happened this way:
I was with mum and brothers and sister in Cairns. We took a ride to Green Island. I found a nice spot over the other side of the island with my girl friend......... Lost all idea of the time and when we headed back we were just in time to see the ferry 50 yards off the end of the wharf on the way home. We ran down the wharf and the skipper took pity and came back.

We got on board (quite red faced) and everyone wanted to talk to us. We were now celebrities!

Don't really know anyone famous but I've worked with a few people responsible for some pretty famous stuff. I was VFX supervisor for a commercial shoot in LA a couple of years ago which had a crazy crew. The director of photography had an Oscar from "Memoirs of a Geisha" (an Aussie by the name of Dion Beebe), the 2nd AD was 2nd unit director on "Ronin" and basically everyone on that job had done some pretty big jobs.
My favorite though was the script supervisor who had worked with Spielberg for the last 20 years and showed me a photo of her, in her younger days, on the set of "Blade Runner"!!
Fortunately my job involved sitting next to her for most of the 2 week shoot listening to her crazy stories :D
I've been on shoots with a few big actors too but I'm not really into celebrity and prefer those that have earned their status behind the camera (or computer as it often is).

A few years ago I got called for jury duty. On the same list was a very well known Sydney socialite "Lady". However she did not front up.

Back in about 1970 my dad came home after work and said guess who I had a beer with at the Belair hotel. A local tv talk show host Ernie Sigley had taken a young Captain Kirk (William Shatner...star trek) to our local pub in the Adelaide hills for a few beers. I begged him to take me to the pub but kids were not allowed in the front bar then.

I have been fortunate enough to have met Gough Whitlam, Vincent lingiari and Frank Hardy, all in different situations. Students of Australian history will recognise the links.
